Born Wellington, 6th June 1947, son of Maurice Patrick Power, and Patricia Leta (nee goodson); Educated: Ruahine Primary School, Dannevirke; Saint Patrick’s College, Silverstream; Otago University, Bachelor of Arts, 1973; Auckland Teacher’s College, diploma Primary Teaching 1974; Auckland University, Diploma of Music 1975; Universita per Stranieri, Perugia, Italian Language Diploma 1976
Studied singing with Flora Edwards, Honor McKellar, Gordon Fagan, Phillip Todd, Eduardo Asquez (current). Amateur operatic debut, Dunedin Opera company 1969; Winner Waikato times Aria contest 1974, Dunedin Aria, other competitions in Australia; left NZ 1976 to study in Europe on grants from NZ Opera Company Trust, Auckland Grand Opera Society, QEII Arts Council; professional debut, Oslo 1976; Principal Lyric Tenor: Norwegian Opera 1976-79, Gaertneeplatz Theatre, Munich 1979-81, Krefeld, Germany 1981-82; freelance 1982- in 15 countries, singing some 50 principal roles in 7 languages; debut Royal Opera, Covent Garden 1983, Paris Opera 1985, Canadian Opera, Toronto, US (San Francisco) 1987, Italy (Pisa) 1988, Australia (Melbourne) 1988; participant international festivals, New York, Wexford, Drottningholm, Glyndebourne, Hong Kong; recorded with CBS, EMI, Phillips.
