Teacher, Taumarunui High School, 1960-61; Information Officer, NZ High Commission, London, 1962-68; Teacher, Fairfield College, Hamilton, 1969-71; Part-time Lecturer, Waikato University 1970-72, Senior Lecturer, Maori Department 1973-76, reader 1976-86, Professor 1987-; Maori Language Commissioner, Wellington (on leave from Waikato University), 1987-90; Member, Advisory Committee on Teaching Maori language; Member, Te Kohanga Reo Board of Trustees.  Tutor, Te Whare Wananga o Waikato Cultural Group, 1976-; Member, Nga Kaiwawao (National Museum Committee), NZ Maori Arts Festival Committee
