Annual Festival

THE AIMS OF THE FESTIVAL are similar to the general aim of the League – “To assist the development of the art of the Theatre and to promote a right relation between drama and the life of the community,” and especially (a) to raise the standard of production among amateur societies by affording them the opportunity of receiving criticism from an impartial adjudicator, and of testing their work before a wider and more critical public; (b) to promote a high standard of dramatic appreciation among audiences, and (c) to encourage the progressive element in the amateur theatre. Information regarding the League and its activities may be obtained from the Honorary Organiser –

Have you seen the Prints
OF HAWKES BAY?
You’ll find them all at BAIRD’S
When members of the Royal Family chose Prints at the British Industrial Fair, a fashion was set for the Spring and Summer Seasons of 1932. They are to be Print Seasons, both for day and evening wear. How fresh and clean they always seem, and really they’re so easy to launder. They come to BAIRD’S in a wonderful selection of patterns and colourings. We have one that will just suit
you. When we have the pleasure of showing you our range, you will agree with us that “the prints of Hawke’s Bay are at Baird’s.”
And the Accessories
So important are the accessories in the ensemble. You will find our selection of Suede and Patent Leather Belts, Buttons, Buckles and Trimmings beyond compare. We will be delighted to show you the New Goods if you will give us the pleasure.

To-day Lucinda has a visitor in Helen, who has called to announce her betrothal. Lucinda will not receive Helen’s fiance in her house nor will she allow Susan, her maid, to have followers. Colonel Redfern, who has now returned to England, calls on Lucinda and again proposes, but Lucinda has found contentment in her old maid’s home, and answers NO for the second time. The consequences of her first refusal have had their effect on Lucinda, who relents in her attitude towards Helen’s fiance and to Susan.

Mr Latimer, a man of impish humour and great wealth, is a philanthropist with an audacious hobby. On the pretence that his house, close by the Dover Road, is an hotel, he uses the power of his wealth by various means to bring run-away couples heading for the Continent under his roof. He keeps them there as his prisoners and guests for a week, as it were on trial so as to give them a chance of changing their minds before it is too late, and endeavours to show each to the other in their least attractive light by ingenious methods of his own. At present he has two couples under treatment, one just arrived and the other about to leave. Husband and wife are thus running away from each other in the same house without being aware of each others presence. This, the second act, shows the adventure in full swing the morning after the arrival of the second couple. Dominic, the butler, should be introduced as the confidential agent of Mr. Latimer.

Gilbert Warren is an author, but while waiting for his manuscripts to be published, he and his wife Sybil are very hard-up. The tradesmen refuse further credit, and they find it difficult to keep up appearances before their maid, Mary.

On this particular evening there is practically nothing for dinner and when an errand boy delivers a chicken at their flat (by mistake), the hungry Gilbert succumbs to temptation and orders the chicken to be put in the oven. Shortly after this, Mr. Tolbooth, who lives in the same building, calls and asks permission to use the Warrens’ telephone, in order to expedite the delivery of some poultry intended for his evening meal, and the situation becomes rather embarrasing [embarrassing] for the Warrens.

Support Your Own Town!
Do you realise that when you buy in other towns you help to pay their rates and taxes; you help to pay their wages; you help to pay their bad debts; you help to pay their improvements; you help to make them prosperous, and you rob your town of its progress, its trade and upkeep.
Indirectly you rob yourself. You owe it to yourself and family to buy in Hastings.
