THE CANTERBURY (N.Z.) CENTENNIAL COMMITTEE HAS MUCH PLEASURE IN INTRODUCING “THE FRIVS” TO CANTERBURY FOLK AND TRUST YOU WILL ENJOY TONIGHT’S ENTERTAINMENT.

If you were alive in 1898 you will remember very little entertainment was provided excepting by an occasional touring show and this was the hey-day of concerts and parties. In Napier a number of young fellows decided on a meeting place to practice singing one night a week. They paid one shilling per week to cover cost of hall-rent and music. Eventually, they decided to appear before the public and thus on 27th September, 1898 was born the Napier Frivolity Minstrels.

During the intervening years “The Frivs” have played in many towns as can be seen by the list of places at which they have performed printed below. They have conducted numerous tours throughout the North Island, but the present tour is their first venture across Cook Strait. They have performed every year for 53 years and raised thousands of pounds for charities, but their principal aim is to help the children. The “Frivs” take pride in the fact that no member of the orchestra, performer or official of any description receives any fee or reward for services in the show. Everything is done free of charge.

We extend to you our greetings on this Centennial festive occasion and hope our visit means good cash in the coffers of the Museum Project. Up goes the curtain on a typical Friv show, we hope you enjoy it.
