The Story of . . .
“Naughty Marietta”

“NAUGHTY MARIETTA” easily ranks as one of the best operettas of America’s beloved Victor Herbert.

The action takes place in New Orleans about 1770, and opens in the Place d’Armes. Captain Dick Warrington has been sent there to capture the notorious pirate, Bras Pique. He meets there, for the second time, an irresponsible high-born girl, Marietta, who has left the convent in order to see the world. Together with a group of “Casket Girls,” she has been sent by the King of France to be married to the young settlers of Louisiana. Marietta persuades Dick to get her a boy’s disguise and, so dressed, is passed off by Rudolfo, a friendly marionette showman, as his son.

The opening scene of the second act takes place in the marionette theatre. There Marietta speedily proves the undoing of her “father,” as she cannot or will not manipulate the puppet strings correctly. Despairingly Rudolfo turns to Dick, who is likewise helpless, and confirmed in the knowledge that he does not love the teasing Marietta.

Meantime, Etienne has been strutting around New Orleans without it being known that he is in reality the notorious Bras Pique. At the ball, to which all the town goes, Etienne auctions off his squadron slave Adah, so that he can marry Marietta. Dick purchases Adah so that he can free her, but this action is misinterpreted by Marietta, who tells Etienne that she will be his bride. Adah prevents this by revealing that Etienne is the pirate Dick has been seeking. Governor Grandet will not, however, arrest his own son, and Etienne makes his escape, leaving Marietta and Dick in the knowledge that they love each other after all.

Our Musical Director, Mr. Henry Rudolph, is perhaps one of the best known musicians in New Zealand, particularly in the capital city, where he was musical director for the Wellington Operatic Society in their recent production of “Oklahoma.”

Mr. Rudolph was Musical Director for the Hastings Musical Comedy Company’s production of “Rose Marie,” and we extent to him a warm welcome on his return visit for our 1957 season of “Naughty Marietta.”

Our Chorus Mistress . . .

Mary Bell is one of the best known and most accomplished musicians in Hawke’s Bay, having been associated with choral, operatic and orchestral societies, competition festivals, ballet and drama for many years. She is widely recognised as one of the leading vocal coaches in the province, and as an accompaniste, too, she is greatly sought after.

The Company has been fortunate indeed in having her services since it first ventured into musical comedy in 1954. The standard of the chorus work in “Sally,” “No, No, Nanette” and “Rose Marie” has been the subject of many favourable comments, and this high standard has been solely due to the flair Mary Bell has for obtaining the co-operation of the whole chorus and extracting from each member the very best of which he or she is capable.

In “Naughty Marietta” she has trained both chorus and principals in their vocal work and also acted as rehearsal pianist, and we think you will agree this is no mean accomplishment. Once again the Society is greatly indebted to Mary Bell.

President’s Remarks . . .

Victor Herbert’s most famous operetta, “Naughty Marietta,” will always be remembered for its record-breaking run as a great cinematic achievement, and we take pride in presenting the Hawke’s Bay Stage Premiere of this beloved musical. Also for the first time in Hawke’s Bay we introduce the use of Colorama.

Colorama features matching scenes and costumes, and in the final stages of the show a full scene, complete with costumes in the varying shades and tones of one colour.

It has always been the aim of the Society to provide entertainment of a high standard, and in the presentation of “Naughty Marietta” we feel we have again achieved our object.

TARANTELLA BALLET

Our Ballet Mistress . . .

Miss Ivena Pothan has been associated with the Society since its inception, being the producer of its first venture, the successful revue “Holiday Cruise.” She has been Ballet Mistress for some of its past successes, a committee member, and has taken part in a number of the Society’s productions.

Miss Pothan is a member of the Royal Academy of Dancing, and has been adjudicator for many competition festivals in Australia and New Zealand. She has been a most successful teacher of dancing for some years, and combines this work with the duties of mother and wife as Mrs. Russell Spencer.

Obituary

The Society has suffered a grievous loss in the recent sad passing of its Vice-President and Business Manager, Mr. J. H. Thornton. He will be sadly missed.

Appeal for Membership . . .

Through the generous support of our productions in recent years the Society has become strong financially, and it is the intention in the coming year to obtain premises suitable for a rehearsal room and the storage of property.

To enable the Society to carry on successfully it is necessary to increase the membership, and an appeal is made to all interested to contact any known member or the Secretary –
