Foreword by the President
Once again it is my privilege to thank the public of Hawke’s Bay for their continued support.

This year marks another milestone for the Frivs., as we now have our own Rehearsal and Club Rooms. This was made possible by the Napier City Council making the building available, a grant of money from the Government, the hard work of our members and the generosity of the public.

We are very proud of this year’s show, “The Shriek of Araby,” and also the new look Minstrel Show produced for the first time by our Interlocutor, Mr Jock Stevenson.

In conclusion, I would like to thank the following persons and organisations, who have greatly assisted the Frivs. in the past and this year’s production: Mrs Waite (costumes), Mr R. Lavin (chorus arrangements), the Hardgrave Brothers (backstage), Front of House Staff, Hawke’s Bay Motor Co. Ltd., Mr Fred Burton (painting), Napier Thirty Thousand Club (use of rooms), G. Stewart (photos), Stewart Greer Motors Ltd. (use of rooms), The Daily Telegraph Co. Ltd., and all those others who may have helped in any way to make the Show the undoubted success it is.

Production Personnel
For the first time the Frivs.’ Minstrel Show has been produced by Jock Stevenson, who also is the Interlocutor. He has for many years been associated with stage work in Napier, and for the past three seasons with the Frivs. In the Pantomime, “The Shriek of Araby,” he plays the role of Sultan Omar Hasaan.

Joan Leonard, who was Ballet Mistress for the last four productions, once again is responsible for this very exacting role. She is well known as a dance teacher in Hastings and plays the leading female role of Suzzi. In this she is a good foil for the mercurial Abdul.

Secretary of the Frivs., Sidney Henney, has once again written and produced the Pantomime section of the Show. This is the ninth Pantomime he has written for the Frivs., and also he has written extensively for radio – children’s plays and sketches.

Thus this production is a blending of the talents of all three concerned. A production the Frivs. hope you will long remember!

The important role of Cornermen has been played for many years by the above members, who also take leading part in each year’s Pantomime. Shown in the picture are (left) Len Dadson as Mr Bones, (centre) Trevor Dockery [Dockary] (Rastus) and Bob Ross (Moses).

To fill the fourth position as Cornerman is Vic Viggers, who becomes Mr Sambo. Vic has been a leading comedian in Hawke’s Bay for many years, playing various leading roles for the Frivs. This year he is the mercurial Square-deal Abdul Albul – the Shriek of Araby.

Many of the popular numbers used in each new Show are the result of Mrs Rose Mardon’s unceasing search for music that suits the Frivs.’ own particular style. This is her six year in the exacting position of Musical Directress. Long may she be associated with the Frivs.

Mrs Rose Mardon

Well known in Hawke’s Bay Dance Band circles is William Mayo, who once again has handled the musical arrangement for the Orchestra.

Stella Astwood, star soloist for the Frivs., is well known in Hawke’s Bay musical circles and has been a member of the Frivs. for the past 14 years. In the Pantomime she has the role of Zuleika and a feature is her contribution of the number “Burning Sands.”

“Characters” From The Show

OMAR! THE SULTAN OF LAND.
Omar! The Sultan of the Land.
Omar! The people think he’s grand.
Omar! Always knows what he’s at.
He’s the greatest one in all the land of Muskrat.
Omar! A mighty man is he.
Give us liberty.
Taxes all go down, not higher.
He’s not like that man Nordmeyer.
Omar! We bow to thee.

I’M FIZZOG THE WOG.
I’m a dirty dog, called Fizzog the Wog;
I’m as cunning as an old wart hog.
When I make a deal all my clients squeal;
Think I’ve done ’em in the eye.
I’ve a business nose, so the saying goes;
I’ve got dinars stuffed in all my clothes.
Some say I’m a crook – I’m an open book,
Honest as the day is long.
Every time I do a transaction
I will always come out on top.
I will guarantee satisfaction –
A hundred per cent, is my cop.

Chorus:
When you’re on pleasure bent and your money’s spent,
Or if you can’t pay the landlord’s rent
Just come straight to me – my advice is free.
Honest Fizz will put you right.

THE SHRIEK OF ARABY
He’s the Shriek of Araby,
A wondrous man to see.
His magic carpet store
Has bargains there galore.
His life is just a whirl;
He chases every girl.
Oh, what it is to be
The Shriek of Araby.

The Shriek of Araby
Is honest as can be.
His carpets are best;
They’ve all been under test.
There are many kinds of makes,
All with hydraulic brakes.
You get top quality
From the Shriek of Araby.

He’s the Shriek of Araby,
A wondrous man to see.
The girls in his harem
Were like an artist’s dream.
His subjects all are loyal.
(His wells are full of oil).
He’s always on the spree,
The Shriek of Araby.
