A MUSICAL ARABIAN NIGHT

“KISMET”

THE STORY

As is common in Eastern plays, the story unfolded on the stage covers only one day – from dawn to dusk and from dusk to dawn.

The public poet, an adventurer, a rogue newly turned beggar and taking the name of Hajj, reveals an unusual talent in the appeal for alms by daring to predict the whims of Fate. We see also, his daughter, Marsinah, who is his dearest love, and whose future happiness he earnestly seeks. Then too, we see both a Caliph, a good man of great power, and his Wazir of Police, who is villainous and corrupt. The Wazir has a favourite wife, Lalume, who could by no means be said to be devoted to her master, but who has a scheme to allay his doubts. Lalume has bargained with the Sheik of Ababu that she will wed one of his three daughters to the all powerful Caliph in return for all the gold ten camels can carry, sufficient to replenish the ravaged city coffers and to provide for some luxuries as well.

A most satisfactory solution to a sad dilemma which only fails because the Caliph sees and falls in love with Marsinah (unaware of who she is and telling her he is but a gardener).

After several remarkable coincidences in Hajj’s good fortunes, the Wazir impressed by the beggars prowess promises that if the Caliph’s marriage fails, Hajj, shall be created an Emir. In the guise of an astrologer, Hajj predicts disaster if the marriage takes place. Sure of his love, the Caliph refuses to believe the warning and Hajj to escape the Wazir’s wrath at his failure flees with Marsinah.
Thus the mariage [marriage] is unwittingly foiled, for the Caliph calls for Marsinah in vain. On hearing that the Caliph’s beloved has disappeared and not guessing it could be Marsinah, Hajj arrives at the Wazir’s palace to claim his reward. Marsinah who has accompanied the poet is arrayed in Harem finery and is seen by the Caliph, who to his utter dismay is advised by the Wazir that she is one of his wives. In his official capacity, the Wazir conducts his own marriage to Marsinah, thus bringing about a situation Hajj is unable to leave entirely to Kismet. Something must be done but hold! Surely some surprise must await you as you watch this story unfold.

Miss Eva Moore
Eva Moore, the producer of “Kismet”, needs little introduction, as she has successfully produced Musical Comedies and Musical Plays for many societies throughout New Zealand. This is her 125th production, a record surely for amateurs and professionals. In addition, her war efforts were outstandingly numerous, producing Gilbert and Sullivan operas for the Armed Forces, compering and producing camp concerts at Trentham, producing for the Wellington Musical Comedy Company, who raised praise-worthy sums for patriotic funds. This is merely a brief resume of her many activities, but as can be gathered, her whole life, like that of her sisters, has been devoted to the theatre. Hector Bolitho once referred to the Moore sisters as “The Royal Family of the Australian Theatre.”

Cedric White
Has directed the musical side of the Society for many years.
He was a member of the original “Kiwi” Concert Party and remained in England under a Government Bursary and passed through the Royal Academy of Music. He was a member of the Savoy Orchestra. He then moved to Paris and enrolled at the National Conservatoire and was in the Alhambra Theatre Orchestra. On his return to New Zealand he toured with the J.C. Williamson organisation, but eventually settled in Napier, where he is in practice as a Public Accountant.

Jean Ballantyne
Choreographer for the Napier Operatic Society, has, with her dancers, been associated with the Society for many productions. Miss Ballantyne, who has a Studio in Hastings, trained with well-known teachers in England, on the Continent, in Australia and New Zealand. In the course of her career she has been closely associated with Amateur Theatre, and has been responsible for numerous Children’s Recitals. Her Senior Ballet toured the Hawke’s Bay area for the Community Arts Service in 1947.

DAWN UNSWORTH
Napier has every reason to be proud of Dawn as we can claim her as our own for she was born and educated here. Dawn possesses a beautiful and powerful soprano voice which gained for her the Ladies Vocal Championship at the Napier Competitions 1960 and 1961 and which will be heard to the greatest advantage in this production of Kismet. We are confident that our Theatre public will warmly acclaim her delightful portrayal of the role of Marsinah.

Commencing her singing career as a pupil of Miss Helen Dykes, Dawn was one of the first solo artists on our local Broadcasting and since moving to Auckland a few years ago she has taken the leading roles in many Musical Comedy productions including “Pirates of Penzance” “H.M.S. Pinafore” “Yeomen of the Guards” and “Amahl and the Night Visitors” for the Titirangi Light Opera Co., and “Pink Champagne” for the Auckland Light Opera Co., Dawn was offered two leading roles in Auckland this year but turned them down to come to her home town to do Kismet for us. Our grateful thanks go to her for standing by us.

LEO BARNETT
We are very fortunate to obtain Leo for the exacting role of the Poet as he is already familiar with this part having played it for the Auckland Operatic Society. Leo possesses a very fine Baritone voice which has won for him the Stenberg Aria and the Milne and Choyce Aria as well as the Vocal Championship at the Hamilton Competitions and he is a very well known vocalist for the Broadcasting Service in Auckland.

His portrayal of the Beggar Poet in this production is a tremendous accomplishment and leaves nothing to be desired. The role is a very demanding one as he is hardly off stage during the whole performance. He opens and closes the show on his own, and we are sure that our public will thoroughly enjoy his performance. Our grateful thanks go to Leo for making himself available to us.
