SYNOPSIS

THE MUSIC MAN

Meredith Willson’s exuberant score of THE MUSIC MAN has the impact of innumerable doors and windows opening on to a naive and golden sunlight.

He spins his story round Professor Harold Hill, the travelling salesman, who explodes on River City, Iowa (pop. 2212), with a wagon load of musical instruments, instruction books and a “think” system. The system is suspiciously simple, but Harold’s rhetoric persuades River City that, with it, the children can conquer the field of musical achievement from Bach to Sousa. Unquestioning faith in this theory is essential, we soon discover, if Harold is to preserve his triple crown of Musical Director, Conductor and Instructor; for, alas, Harold’s own musical talent never even surmounted the five finger exercise.

In no time at all the children are his slaves; petticoats are swirling; hair, hats and doubts are flying, and River City is in the grip of a carnival mood which is only threatened by the imminent disgrace of this modern “Pied Piper.”

Without giving away the adventures of Harold Hill in River City, sufficient to say-Boy meets Girl, Boy loses Girl, Boy gets Girl and Harold finds his “foot caught in the door” for the first time, everything reaching a climax with beauty and harmony, as far as the towns folk of River City are concerned, with the performance of the “Minuet in G”.

Meredith Willson’s score abounds in musical invention. The unaccompanied Octet “Rock Island” is a brilliant vocal account of a train pulling away from a wayside halt and thundering through the countryside to the next whistle stop. With superb theatrical economy Mr Willson introduces his hero through the eyes of rival salesmen, and sends his show off to a magnificent start.

Harold’s “Trouble” proves a fascinating pace setter: The Quartet of Directors, eternally demanding Harold’s credentials, and whom he eludes by the delicious expedient of beguiling them into four-part harmony, is an adroit excuse for “Sincere” and “Lida Rose” and a triumph for the Iowa Four. The stumbling efforts of Marian’s piano pupil, Amaryllis evokes the nostalgic “Goodnight My Someone.” But the core and climax is the rip-roaring “Seventy-six Trombones” which raises the roof of River City and the lids off our hearts.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRODUCER.

In producing “The Music Man” in Napier, I have attempted to retain as far as possible, Mr Meredith Willson’s original characterisations, especially in the case of Eulalie and the Ladies’ Quartet. All these Ladies can be found in everyday Society, though, on stage, are depicted, far “larger than life”. Not only have I had the advantage of Mr Willson’s own notes but have been able to witness a number of performances of “The Music Man” performed by the Light Opera Club in Auckland, whose producer, Mr Stan Lawson, was flown to England, to be able to present, as far as possible, the original production.

To all those concerned in the Napier Operatic Society, I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation for the wonderful co-operation and friendship I have received.. From the Musical Director Choreographer, Principals, Dancers, Chorous[Chorus] and the many wonderful people working back-stage, I have noticed nothing but a very fine “team spirit”.

A MESSAGE FROM THE COMPOSER

Los Angeles,
July 13th, 1962.

I would give anything to hear Napier’s version of my hometown “River City” Iowa – but short of our being able to fly down under to that purpose, please know that Mrs Willson and I are thrilled with what we have heard about your performance and we will be thinking of you, opening night.

Love to you all,
Meredith Willson.
