The Bargain was first produced at St. Martin’s Theatre, London on January 19th,1961, directed by Alastair Sim, and in which Mr. Sim played the part of George Selwyn. In “Plays of the Year” J. C. Trewin describes the play “as a very good night in the theatre and says the play concerns a miniature possibly by Cosway more probably by Goya. What we can call the mutability of human affairs obliges our solicitor to depart from his air of respectability late at night in a slightly dubious flat off Charing Cross Road . . . ”
