Message from Mr. Lionel Wainscott,
President of the Rotary Club of Hastings.

I welcome you to this SOUTH PACIFIC ENTERTAINMENT and hope that you will have an enjoyable evening.

1971 is being observed in New Zealand as SOUTH PACIFIC YEAR. As their contribution, and to mark the GOLDEN JUBILEE OF ROTARY in New Zealand, Rotary Clubs are raising $100,000 to establish a trust to benefit the developing peoples of the South Pacific. The proceeds from tonight’s entertainment are for this worthy project.

The money is to be spent over a period of 10 years for such purposes as –
bursaries to enable students to attend educational institutions in the South Pacific, including New Zealand;
grants for educational and training purposes or for practical development projects such as irrigation and animal husbandry;
vocational training in the Pacific Islands or New Zealand;
support of volunteer workers abroad.

On behalf of the Hastings Rotary Club, I wish to thank the students from St. Joseph’s, Hukarere and Te Aute Colleges, the Midget Drum Dancers, the Cook Island Action Group, Mr. Paul Waring and Mr. Chris Van Oeveren who by providing the programme have made this entertainment possible.

LIONEL H. WAINSCOTT.
