Society Activities   1971 – 72

Recently the Society was successful in obtaining the building adjacent to the Hall in Coronation Street. This building has proved a boom to the Society enabling us to carry out construction of the many sets required for ‘South Pacific’. Also, it has enabled us to transfer from our Hall all wardrobe and sets of previous productions for permanent storage. Our Hall has been put to regular use for rehearsals and with the clearance of the sets and wardrobe mentioned above, enabled a willing band of workers of the Social Club to begin alterations of the upstairs area into a recreational facility.

Under the direction of our Producer, a theatre workshop was formed late last year to promote young talent in the ways of stage craft. The culmination of their efforts came in March this year when they entertained seventy selected members to exerpts [excerpts] from ‘My Fair Lady’ and something called a Psychedelic Happening’. So successful were their efforts that the intention is to continue these classes after the South Pacific season is ended. Also formed since last year’s major production was the Operatic Society Social Club. Members of this club meet regularly and their programme is one of variety including this year a Car Rally, Sea Trip around the Bay and Skiing!! Both these groups would like greater membership and interested people should contact either James Morgan, John Collier or any other member of this Society.

It is the Society’s intention to produce a pantomime early in 1972 and this will be performed (it is hoped) in our Hall. August, 1972 sees our first combined effort with Hastings Light Opera Club in bringing to Napier and Hastings audiences ‘Oliver’. The combined efforts of both Societies will ensure what we hope will be a tremendous show. Several of our backstage team assisted in the Hastings Club’s production of ‘Desert Song’. A combined committee of both Societies meets regularly, even during the production of ‘South Pacific’. Apart from the pooling of resources this has effected a close harmony between the Twin Cities of Napier and Hastings. 1972 looks like being an exciting year! If you would care to join us actively, any member of the executive will be willing to tell you how! You are assured of a very warm welcome.

Musical director
CECIL FITZWATER

Music maker to the Society, Ces is conducting his fourth show in partnership with James Morgan. He is a tireless and meticulous worker who is required to assemble and train the orchestra and to rehearse principals and chorus. With his musical knowledge and proven ability patrons are assured musically “South Pacific” will be first rate from the moment he raises his baton.

Producer
JAMES MORGAN

Once again this Society has expressed its confidence by appointing James Morgan as its producer for South Pacific. Nothing is too much trouble for James and if talent and willingness to learn are present, his drive, enthusiasm and wealth of theatrical experience will enable performers to achieve the highest of standards.

This year he has also directed for the Society a theatre workshop in stagecraft which he hopes will develop and encourage up and coming young talent. His previous productions for this Society assure theatre-goers that “South Pacific” will be an enriching and unforgettable experience.

Starring –

ROBERT HOUSTON
Robert needs no introduction to Hawke’s Bay audiences. He has played leading roles in many productions for this Society. His performance as King Arthur in ’Camelot’ was hailed as one of outstanding virtuoso. Now, as Emile de Becque, he again reaches great heights both as a singer and an actor.

DAWN UNSWORTH
A favourite of Hawke’s Bay audiences, Dawn delights in versatility, singing Rodgers as happily as she sings Bach and enjoying every minute on stage. The challenge of creating each new role is irresistible to her and as Nellie Forbush she is, as always, superb.

GILLIAN DAVIES
Gillian has a well earned reputation throughout dramatic circles as both an actor, producer and teacher of speech. She last appeared for this Society as Sister Margaretta in ’The Sound of Music’. Her performance as Bloody Mary will be long remembered.

ANTHONY BEWLEY
As a King in ’Amahl’ and Prison Governor in ‘Pink Champagne’ Anthony was accorded well earned acclaim. We feel he will add further lustre to his stage ability by his performance as Lieutenant Cable.

GERALD BROWN
Well known in Napier for his repertory roles, Gerald last appeared for the Society as Sir Sacramore in ‘Camelot’. His ready wit ideally suits this versatile actor to the comedy role of Luther Billis.

The Story

From the fluent pens of Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers comes the musical adaption of James A. Michener’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel ‘Tales of the South Pacific’ to win outstanding success everywhere it is produced.

The action takes place on two islands of the South Pacific and the time is a lull during the fighting in the war with Japan.

Two romantic themes weave their way through the story. The love affair of Ensign Nellie Forbush, the charming and high spirited nurse from Little Rock, Arkansas, and the gallant, middle-aged French planter Emile de Becque. The other delightful romance is that of the young American marine, Lieutenant Joseph Cable, and the lovely Tonkinese girl, Liat. Surrounding these main characters are such fascinating people as Bloody Mary, Liat’s Mother tough bawdy, hard as nails and growing rich from her sales of ’souvenirs’ to the gullible members of the forces; and Luther Billis, a knowing and earthy Seabee, who helps to provide the lighter touch.

Nellie Forbush and Emile de Becque fall in love, but the way of

Although ‘South Pacific’ on stage has been hired, a large amount of necessary construction has been undertaken by a team under the leadership of Barry Parker, our Stage Manager. Similarly with wardrobe June Kauter and her team have spent many hours altering costumes and making new ones. The Society is appreciative of all their efforts and commends their work for your generous consideration.
