TRADITION
A fiddler on the roof. Sounds crazy, no? But in our little village of Anatevka, you might say every one of us is a fiddler on the roof, trying to scratch out a pleasant, simple tune without breaking his neck … Because of our traditions, we’ve kept our balance for many, many years.
Here in Anatevka we have traditions for everything … how to eat, how to sleep, how to wear clothes.
For instance, we always keep our heads covered and always wear a little prayer shawl. This shows our constant devotion to God.
Our men are separated from women during prayers so the men can concentrate and not be diverted.
Our mothers kindle the Sabbath candles which are a symbol of joy.
We kiss the mezuzzah on the door post because this little scroll contains a portion of a most important prayer. It is a constant reminder of God’s law.
Our wedding canopy was originally a bridal tent in which the bride stayed for seven days. Circling it emphasises righteousness and faithfulness forever. In fact the circles we do in our dances are to emphasise the strong ties of the Jews.
Glass, once a precious object, is sacrificed at a wedding in order to avoid greater misfortune. Our men and women dance separately because of an ancient belief that women were not always clean.
Once married, our women, in order not to attract other men have their hair shaved off and wear a wig on formal occasions.
We say to you: Mazeltov (good luck) and L’chaim (to health)!

Fiddler on the Roof
PRESENTED BY NAPIER OPERATIC SOCIETY UNDER DIRECT NEGOTIATION WITH MUSIC THEATRE INTERNATIONAL LTD., NEW YORK.
The Jews of Anatevka, a village in Tzarlst Russia, are peasants. Tevye, the dairyman, tells how their strength derives from age-old TRADITION.
At home, his wife, Golde, and five daughters prepare for the Sabbath. Yente, the matchmaker, tells Golde the butcher, Lazar, hopes to marry Tevye’s eldest daughter, Tzeitel. Golde is delighted but fears Tevye won’t approve. Tzeitel, in love with the tailor, Motel, can only guess what Yente proposes. With her sisters, Hodel and Chava, she sings MATCHMAKER, MATCH MAKER.
Meanwhile, Tevye, obliged to pull his cart because his horse is lame, sings IF I WERE A RICH MAN. He meets Perchik, a student, who agrees to teach Tevye’s daughters in exchange for food. He joins the family in the peace of SABBATH PRAYER.
Tevye joins Lazar at the inn and is persuaded to let Tzeitel marry Lazar. The men sing the toast: TO LIFE.
Tzeitel begs Tevye not to insist on the match. She and Motel confess to a secret betrothal. Tevye is shocked: the papa should choose his daughter’s husband. But impressed by Motel’s courage and the depth of Tzeitel’s feelings, gives his consent. Motel sings: MIRACLE OF MIRACLES.
Prompted by respect for Golde’s bitter tongue, Tevye chooses the middle of the night to tell her of the change. Pretending a nightmare, he tells how Frumasarah, Lazar’s first wife, and her own Grandma Tzeitel, long since dead, appeared in his sleep. Golde, reduced to terror, agrees Motel is the man for Tzeitel:THE DREAM.
At the height of the traditional wedding, SUNRISE SUNSET, Russian demonstrators smash the gifts.
Troubles spread. Perchik joins the fight against the Tzar, but first asks Hodel to marry him: NOW I HAVE EVERYTHING. Tevye, again unable to resist a daughter, gives his blessing. Timidly he breaks the news to Golde: DO YOU LOVE ME?
The village hears Perchik has been arrested and sent to Siberia. Hodel joins him there: FAR FROM THE HOME I LOVE.
The Tzar decrees all Jews must leave Anatevka in three days. Even Tevye, whose third daughter Chava, married a Russian, cannot be spared. The villagers mourn for the sorry place which has been their home: ANATEVKA. They leave to start new lives in Poland, the Holy Land, America…

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
JOHN COLLIER
After announcing, last year, our intention to alter and extend our premises at Ahuriri, the Executive Committee have been working very hard to obtain an early start on this building programme. A restaurant theatre will certainly be an asset to Hawke’s Bay from both an actors’ and the public’s point of view.
This does not, however, mean that we will forgo our major productions in the large theatres but rather it will enable us to present a wider variety of theatre (keeping in mind that some productions are more suited to a smaller, more intimate theatre).
During the year we have also given our full support, in conjunction with other societies and drama groups, to holding a drama school tutored by nationally-known personalities. This week-long school will take place in January 1974 and will cater for all age groups from 11 upwards.
On top of all this, you will see tonight the fruition of months of rehearsal in this year’s major production of “Fiddler on the Roof”. In my opinion, there is no need to say any more about this production as the high standard that has been attained will speak for itself.
On behalf of the whole company, I invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy a night of complete theatre. Thank you for your patronage.

speculation versus knowhow
experience counts!
General Finance have been in centre ring for a long time now. Through their experience, they’ve picked up all the investment knowhow. Some people might call the General Finance style of money management slightly conservative.
But it encourages investors’ and borrowers’ confidence which has enabled the Company’s assets to steadily grow from $4,000,000 to over $44,000,000 in the last nine years.
People will continue to put their money on proven knowhow … experience has shown it can last the distance.
