Acknowledgements

There are now three Maori Festival committees, Wairoa, Napier/Hastings, and Central Hawkes Bay, which are fostering and encouraging the growth of all aspects of Maoritanga. These committees serve the area from Wairoa to Woodville and in all, are willing and able to cater for all schools in this area. However the Napier/Hastings area is still holding its four nights, because schools from other areas still enjoy the contact with this main group. We welcome all school groups and trust that continued participation in the festival will be both enjoyable and educational.

Once again the many sections of the Education Department, from kindergarten to tertiary level, and the community, have banded together to stage the 1977 Festival.

“Na tou raurau na toku raurau ka ora te manuhiri.” Loosely translated – “With your contribution and my contribution the task will be done.”

So to the tutors, to the schools and their staff, to all involved, especially the children, the committee says:
“Tena rawa, ata koutou katoa. Kia kaha, kia toa kia ora.”

TAWHIRI-MATEA.

When the children of Rangi, the Sky Father and Papa, the Earth Mother, parted them, to create the world as we know it today, one of the children, Tawhiri Matea, was not happy and left with his father; father Rangi to live in the heavens. He was the God of the Winds. He fathered most of the forces of nature, wind, snow, frost, ice, rain, hail, mist, and clouds of many kinds.

His brothers, the other Gods, remained with their mother on earth. Tawhiri-Matea has waged war on them since. He first attacked Tangaroa and the life in the ocean until the waves were torn into spray and foam. Next he roared over the land and laid waste the forests of Tane. During the storm, Tangaroa fled to the depths of the sea. His two grandchildren, Ika-Tere, father of fish life, and Tu-te-Wehiwehi, father of reptiles, argued over the best place to hide. After bitter argument they parted, Ika-Tere for the sea and Tu-te-Wehiwehi for the land where they have remained since. Tane and Tangaroa took sides with the one who had fled to them for protection and also became enemies.

Tane supplied wood for canoes, spears and fishhooks for the men to catch and eat the children of Tangaroa. Tangaroa constantly makes war against the land, swallowing up land and things manmade. Even in the far-off days much of the earth was submerged. Tawhiri Matea helped the sea. He was responsible for Ua-nui (great rain) Ua-roa (long rain), Ua-whetu (Fierce hailstorms), Ua-nganga (furious rain), and their offspring Haumaringi (mist), Tomairangi (light dew) and Hau-marotoroto (heavy dew)

Tawhiri Matea next attacked Rongo-ma-tane and Haumia-tiketike, Gods of cultivated and uncultivated foods but they were hidden underground by Papa. Nevertheless they could not hide forever. Then Tawhiri Matea turned his attention to Tu-matauenga the father of man. Tu-matauenga, also God of War, withstood all his fury and remained unmoved. After this setback Tawhiri Matea felt that honour had been satisfied and returned to his own realm.

Tu-matauenga was disappointed that his brother gods had not supported him. It was he who learnt how to use materials from Tane’s children in the forest to snare and trap birds. He also used the same material to make lines and nets to catch Tangaroa’s offspring. It was he who found the offspring of Rongo-ma-tane and Haumia-tiketike by their hair sticking out of the ground (leaves of kumara and fern.) He made wooden ko and dug them up and put them in flax baskets. He learnt to cook and eat them. In this way he shamed his brother gods and claimed victory.

He was unable to claim victory over Tawhiri Matea. Often Tawhiri Matea and his offspring lull Tu-matauenga and his offspring by bringing cool breezes or water for drinking and just as they feel good he changes and creates tremendous havoc.

Na,
Bill Gillies./I.T.M./1978.
