The Time:   Between New Year’s Eve 1929 and through the first months of 1930.
The Place:   Berlin, Germany – just prior to the rise of complete power of Hitler’s Nazi Regime.
Background:   In Autumn 1930, Christopher Isherwood, Novelist, wrote of Berlin, of the frenzied gaiety cloaking the
unease of a fanatical belief in the Fatherland.  He wrote ‘‘I am a camera, passive, recording, not thinking’’.
In Cabaret:   “The fixed and printed’’ pictures are revealed to us by the M.C. –
– The tarnished glitter of the Kit Kat Klub
– A refuge from reality for the naive yet appealing Sally Bowles
– The insidious growth of the Nazi Party
– The tenderness and love of two older people
– The insight of the novelist himself
– The sad acceptance of the few
– The resignation of Germany to its future.
