A Play with two stories

The intriguing thing about Dale Wasserman’s “Man of La Mancha” is that it tells two stories at once – the story of Miguel de Cervantes, author, imprisoned at the time of the Spanish Inquisition, and the story of Cervantes’ creation, the mad knight Don Quixote who rambles across the plains of La Mancha in search of a lady and the most improbable quests.

Ageing, infirm, an utter failure, he undertook the writing of “Don Quixote” to make money. His two volumes brought him fame, but little money. He died in 1616, broken in body, if not in spirit. His burial place is unknown.

. . . And so it is in “Man of La Mancha”. Cervantes is gaoled by the guards of the Inquisition. The prisoners, to pass the time, put him on trial. Cervantes decides to use as his defence the story of “Don Quixote”. Cervantes takes the leading role and he asks the prisoners to play the other characters as he acts out his story.

Wasserman discovered that Cervantes was born in 1547 to a proud but improverished [impoverished] family; he was a soldier, suffered serious wounds, was taken captive and spent five years as a slave in Africa. Above all, he loved the theatre. In 20 years he wrote 40 plays, none successful. In 1597 he was excommunicated for “offences against His Majestry’s [Majesty’s] Most Catholic Church.” He served at least three, possibly five, terms in prison on various charges.

Robert Houston
One of the greatest actors in the country today and the possessor of a magnificent baritone voice. Over the years he has played many leading roles for the Society, the climax of which must have been a truly superlative performance as Tevye’ in “Fiddler on the Roof”.
Robert brings to life the mad knight ‘Don Quixote’ whose encounters and quests are both humorous and entertaining. The role demands that he be on stage for all but two minutes of the whole performance and the amount of dialogue he has to deliver is remarkable.

Dallas Beckett
The very difficult and demanding role of ‘Aldonza’ is the greatest challenge to date for Dallas. This twenty-year-old receptionist for the Napier City Council first appeared in “The King and I” as a dancer and followed this with many fine dramatic performances both in Musicals and Repertory.
Her performance in this very physical role will further enhance her to you all.

Albert (Lex) Barker
In this, his fourth role for the Society, Lex handles the difficult role of that lovable character ‘Sancho’, with considerable aplomb and great understanding.
Previous successes were in “West Side Story” for the Hastings Musical Comedy Company and for many years in Repertory both as an actor and producer. Without doubt his remarkable talents will appeal to theatre audiences.

The play will be performed without an interval.

“Man of La Mancha” is suggested by the life and works of Miguel de Cervantes Y Saavedra.

Welcome to Man of La Mancha …
Welcome to the Napier Operatic Society’s production of Man of La Mancha. This musical won all awards in the U.S.A. for “The Best Musical 1966” (The New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award: The Antoinette Perry (Tony) Award: The Outer Circle Award: Variety Poll and Saturday Review).
“Man of La Mancha” has been referred to generally as the Don Quixote musical, but it is not strictly speaking, an adaptation of Don Quixote at all. It is an original work that merges the life of Cervantes and this writer’s spirit and identity with that of his fictional creation Don Quixote.
“Man of La Mancha” might most conveniently be described as a musical within a play, but in truth its originality of form defies classification wherever it has played. “Man of La Mancha ‘ has been acclaimed as a musical triumph and theatre at its finest.
We trust that you also will find it so.

A note on Miguel De Cervantes …
Like his contemporary, William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes Y Saavedra lived a life only sparsely documented, many years of which are veiled in shadow. These things are known; he was born in 1547 to a proud but impoverished Hidalgo family; he was a soldier, suffered serious wounds at the battle of Lepanto, was taken captive and spent five years as a slave in Africa. Above all he loved the theatre; in twenty years he wrote some forty plays, none of which were successful. In 1597 he was excommunicated for “Offences against His Majesty’s most Catholic Church”, narrowly escaping more drastic punishment. He served at least three, and possibly five terms in prison on various charges. Ageing, infirm, an utter failure, he undertook the writing of Don Quixote to make money. Volume 1, published in 1605, brought him fame but little profit. Volume 2, appearing ten years later, insured his immortality as author of the world’s greatest novel but he was already broken in body, if not in spirit.
He died in 1616, within ten days of the death of Shakespeare.
His burial place is unknown.

President’s Message

Napier Operatic Society’s Production of “Man of La Mancha” is the first attempt by an amateur Society of this original and difficult show.

Because it is a ‘first’ a number of special difficulties had to be overcome, before this show could be staged before you.

The set had to be designed and built. All costumes and properties including Don Quixote’s breastplate, the heads of the horse and donkey, were hand-made. This has kept Society members and helpers extremely busy over the last few months. I and my fellow Society officers wish to extend a special thank you to all those who have participated in the production.

It has been a long, hard slog for all and we’re grateful.

To our audience, I hope you enjoy the show as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you.
