PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Theatre Hawke’s Bay is delighted to be able to share with you this current production of “The Last of the Summer Wine”.

Roy Clarke portrays wonderful British characters who have become firm favourites on our television screens and now come to life on our stage.

Hopefully the next time you visit our theatre we will have begun, or we will be about to begin, the extensions to the foyer area to increase your comfort and improve the access to the theatre. If you are overcome with the urge to sponsor this development or contribute in any way please talk to our Front of House staff.

We hope you enjoy your evening. Sit back, forget the cares of the day and relac [relax] as you enter into the whimsical world that Roy Clarke created and Ken Keys and the cast and crew have interpreted.

DIRECTORS
Thanks, Lionel, and above all, thanks, Robin Barker, for asking me to direct this wonderful show.

It was Robin’s enthusiasm about the sell-out Gisborne production, and his indefatigable and drawn-out pursuit of the performing rights, that made this Hawkes Bay Theatre show possible.

Since then, I have really begun to understand why this is, apparently, the longest-running television comedy show in the world. It’s just very, very funny! Not only “funny” but it’s “fun” … which is not necessarily the same thing. “Fun” to do and, I have no doubt, fun to watch! I can’t remember a comedy I’ve been involved in where the cast have had such a ball at rehearsals.

The version you will see tonight is a brilliant adaptation for the stage. It is a classical farce, with all the necessary crazy-racing-around, concealment, confusion that goes with the word “farce”. Yet, it loses nothing of the warm characterization of the original. Compo, Cleggy, Foggy and their lady “supporters” are still larger than life.

Finally, we have not attempted slavishly to produce clones of the television characters. Each actor/actress tonight brings his/her own qualities to their character, so you will see “our show”. I am sure you will enjoy watching it with as much delight as we have had rehearsing it.

ROY CLARKE
Avid television watchers, and those who tune in occasionally, will all find themselves familiar with some or all of the work of British writer Roy Clarke.

His original television comedies include “Open All Hours” (which won the Pye TV Award), “Keeping Up Appearances” (which gained a Writers” Guild nomination in 1991) “Spark”, “First of the Summer Wine” and of course, “Last of the Summer Wine” (Pye TV Award and Radio Industries Award 1982).

Roy Clarke has also written several Television and Drama series which featured on ATV and BBC TV, nominally “The Misfit” (Writers Guild Award), “Flickers” (chosen for an Emmy nomination in 1980), “Pictures” and “The Sharp End”.

Other plays include “The Back of Beyond”, “That Sinking Feeling”, “The Man in the Middle” and “The Chemist”.

If you are not a television fan you might enjoy Roy Clarke’s books “Gala Week”, “The Moonbather”, “Summer Wine Country” and, of course, “Hyacinth Bucket’s Book of Etiquette”.

Roy Clarke is a very entertaining writer and this play is worthy of his best.

Richard Waren [Warren]
From playing a ten year old in “Blue Remembered Hills” to a sixty something Jim in “Market Forces” the theatre has given Richard a wide scope to be ‘someone else’.
“Compo gives me a chance to wear long johns (who would pass up the opportunity) and explore another avenue of comedy, and it is great to be back at Theatre Hawke’s Bay again”.

Annette von Hartitzsch
Since 1991 Annette has performed in many musicals such as “Cabaret”, “Chicago”, and “Fiddler on the Roof”, for Waipawa Musical and Dramatic Society and Waipukurau Little Theatre. Annette first trod the boards at The Playhouse in “Blue Remembered Hills” also directed by Ken Keys. This production is Annette’s first venture back in stage since “70 Girls 70” three years ago.

Adrienne Hurley
Adrienne has been acting since her school days and has been lucky enough to move around New Zealand and be involved with plays and musical productions for many different theatres. Earlier this year Adrienne took a One Act Play to National Finals, which was very exciting for her, then to Norfolk Island for the Trans Tasman Competition, which she won! This is Adrienne’s first production with Theatre Hawke’s Bay and she has loved having the opportunity to be in a play based on a television programme that she loved over the years.

Wendy Beauchamp
Being part of a theatre-mad family (3 daughters and a husband) means that family life at times is rather hectic. Wendy first trod the boards as a chorus member in “Rhythm ‘n’ Ritz” in 1993 and since then has eagerly performed in musicals, revues, pantomimes, dramas and comedies. “Aladdin”, “Joyful and Triumphant” and “The Big OE” to name a few. As a school teacher, theatre has provided Wendy with excellent training in the arts especially when it comes to school productions!

Wayne Lister
Wayne first appeared on stage in 1961. Since that time he has performed in many local productions including “Kiss me Kate”, “Taming of the Shrew” and “The Sound of Music”. Wayne has also directed and co-written a Music Hall and Vaudeville Show and also appeared in the Theatre Hawkes Bay production of “Carousel” and we welcome him back to the Playhouse.

Dave Horne
David has been active in theatre in the Hawke’s Bay for about 35 years. Some of the shows he has appeared in include, “The Odd Couple” where he played Murray, “Oliver Twist” where he was Bill Sykes and “Move over Mrs Markham”. David has also appeared in several Shakespeare plays. Theatre Hawke’s Bay welcomes him to The Playhouse for this production in the role of Clegg.

Larry Pitt
Since 1978, Larry has appeared in around fifty plays, mostly comedy and drama for Levin Little Theatre. On moving to Waipukurau he has appeared on stage for Waipukurau Little Theatre and in the show “My Fair Lady” for Waipawa Music and Dramatic Society. This is Larry’s third play for Theatre Hawke’s Bay, the others being “Market Forces” and “Deathtrap”.

Dick Klingender
Dick was first seen on stage in Waipukurau around 46 years ago in “Pink String” and then “You can’t take it with you”. He also appered [appeared] in “Holiday Cruise” which was the first production for the Hastings Musical Comedy Company. Theatre Hawke’s Bay has enjoyed seeing Dick back on stage in the role of Wally.

Glen Sutherland
Glen is widely known in Hawke’s Bay, as she has been involved in all types of theatre for many years. She really likes working with children. We are happy to welcome Glen back to our theatre for this production.

David Burfield
David has appeared in many shows for Theatre Hawke’s Bay, the first being in 1999 with “70 Girls 70”. Others include “Me and My Girl” and “The Big OE”. He has also been involved backstage for numerous shows and was a committee member in 2002. David has previously appeared on stage with five cast members from this production and said he has learnt a lot from their years in theatre.

Steve Driver
Beginning a stage career at the age of 43 in Palmerston North as an extra in “The Sound of Music”, Steve then became Officer Krupke in “West Side Story”. After moving to Napier he has appeared in many Theatre Hawke’s Bay productions including “Twist and Shout”, “Bouncers” and playing the role of the Streaker.

Jane White
Starting in theatre as a child Jane has been ‘showing off’ on stage most of her life. She has been involved in pantomimes to music hall and has even won Comedienne of the Year with musical comedy. In her ‘mature’ years, “70 Girls 70” revived Jane’s interest in theatre. Jane has found this production to be most enjoyable. “Here’s hoping we are never too old.”
