PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It is with great pleasure I welcome you to Urinetown, the last of our 2008 Tony Season shows. Winning Tony Awards for the best book and best score in 2002, Urinetown is a humorous tale of greed, corruption, love and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold! The show, set in a Gotham-like city rejects musical theatre convention, parodying many of the most successful Broadway shows.

It has been a real pleasure to work for the extremely talented creative team; Director Chris Davidson, Musical Director Wendy Revell, Choreographer Rachel Doohan and equally talented cast and production teams. The sense of parody and clever satire that extends to the wonderful, yet comic score has allowed the company to have a huge amount of fun along the way.

We sincerely thank our sponsors and supporters; it is the generosity of these companies and individuals that allows Napier Operatic to continue producing quality Musical Theatre experiences that showcase our wealth of local talent and expertise.

On behalf of the company who have dedicated many hours to this production, I invite you to sit back, enjoy our hospitality and this unique show.

Dale Reid
President

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Urinetown was born in the late 1990s when author Greg Kotis was ‘caught short’ when on his OE in Paris. He was horrified at having to pay for a pee and, in his fury, he extended the idea beyond his own personal tragedy to that of the (possible) end of toilet life as we know it. He then linked with musician and lyricist Mark Hollman and, together, they composed the show keeping only material that made them both laugh. They not only took the time to skewer popular sustainable ideas but also, incidentally, to ‘take the piss’ out of the entire genre of musical theatre. As director I am neither a social activist or an environmental saint, I confess terror at what we are doing to our earth but, like most of us, I have no real idea what to do to alter our reality. Hence Urinetown. If we can’t repair the Titanic, we may as well have a bloody great laugh as we sink.

Hail Malthus!!
Thomas Robert Malthus FRS (13 February 1766 – 23 December 1834) was an English political economist and demographer who expressed views on population growth and noted the potential for populations to increase rapidly, and often faster than the food supply available to them. Commentators may refer to such a runaway scenario, as outlined in Malthus’s treatise An Essay on the Principle of Population, as a “Malthusian catastrophe”.

DIRECTOR
CHRIS DAVIDSON

I have a deep love of comedy; especially black comedy. Urinetown is the blackest of the black. It not only skewers the modern sustainability doctrine, but also goodness, truth, honesty and the right to a glass of cold fresh water.

I have been an evangelist for this show for some years and it is an honour and privilege to be now allowed to direct it. This is a marvellous new show that, because there is no movie, book or even T-shirt, we can stamp it to our own shape and we have.

To do justice to a show like Urinetown, a director needs a strong creative team, a fantastic, dedicated cast and the support of a vibrant society. All these I have in spades.

All you, the audience, have to do is sit back, drink up (but not too much because you know what happens next!) and enjoy the show.

Hail Malthus!

MUSICAL DIRECTOR
WENDY REVELL

My involvement in theatre over the past 35 years as an actor, singer, dancer, musician and director has given me an appreciation of various ‘musical styles’. Urinetown stands alone. It’s fun and exciting. It has been a most enjoyable experience rehearsing the vocal score with such a dedicated and talented cast. I would especially like to thank our rehearsal pianist, Paul Carnegie-Jones, for his expertise and the members of the band who play an integral part in this play. Enjoy the evening.

ASSISTANT MUSICAL DIRECTOR
PAUL CARNEGIE-JONES

I began playing the piano 15 years ago and I am a jazz and classical solo pianist, accompanist, and repetiteur. Urinetown is the third production I have undertaken with Napier Operatic Society: past involvements being Les Misérables (2002) and The Producers (2008.) My other involvements in 2008 include Menotti’s The Telephone for OperaHB, and productions of Beauty and the Beast and Cabaret. I have worked with vocalists, instrumentalists, and choirs and I specialise in vocal repertoire and am affiliated with an array of professional and emerging classical operatic voices. As a jazz enthusiast, I play keyboards for CHB band Rothko, and for the John Redman Trio. As a soloist, I have given recitals in Auckland and Wellington, with recitals and concerts scheduled for summer and throughout 2009.

CHOREOGRAPHER
RACHEL DOOHAN

I was introduced to the wonderful world of musical theatre last year, when my passion for dance led to the role of Victoria, the white kitten in Napier Operatic Society’s production of CATS. After finishing year 13 at Sacred Heart College last year, I took the chance to work for a year in preparation for university in 2009. My ‘year off’ has proved to bring many exciting opportunities, this being one of them. In the position of choreographer I have come to appreciate many things including: positive attitudes, drive, energy, co-operation, the willingness to practice and punctuation, all things that our cast have demonstrated. Urinetown is not what you would call conventional, but it is a fabulous show! One with very clever dialogue, music and lyrics, guaranteed to make you giggle uncontrollably. A huge thank you to the marvellous Urinetown team.

CAST

CHRIS ATKINSON
It’s been three years since I joined the Napier Operatic Family, and I have had trouble getting off stage since then! Since first hearing about Urinetown I was intrigued by the subject matter and I love the satire and musical parodies. It’s been great fun working alongside so many friends and meeting new people with so much talent.

SOPHIE BARR
I am 16 years old, and currently a year 12 student at Napier Girls’ High School. I have performed in shows for 6 years, starting with Annie in 2003 with Napier Operatic and most recently playing the role of Mona (a.k.a. Lipschitz) as well as being in the dance chorus of NGHS production of Chicago in 2008. I am thrilled to have been cast as ‘Little Sally’, as this is my first Napier Operatic lead, which is really testing my abilities, but of course I am having tonnes of fun along the way! This show is quickly becoming my favourite because of the catchy music, funny one-liners and awesome cast.

BEN BLACK
I was raised in Whakatane and moved to Napier where I gained my Diploma in Performing Arts, Since living in Napier I have created a reputation being the local Mascot for the Magpies Rugby team and the Hawks Basketball team and have recently gained my Modern Apprenticeship in Tourism through the National Aquarium of NZ. When I heard Urinetown, I thought to myself that it would be a hilarious and fun musical to be in, and it has lived up to expectations. I have enjoyed working with a great bunch of people.

SUZANNE COLLINS
Having joined Napier Operatic society two years ago, and having assisted with waitressing and in the kitchen I felt it was time to once again “tread the boards”! Previous involvement with theatre, and the encouragement from my partner Kerry gave me the courage to have another go and I am thoroughly enjoying working with the talented cast. Enjoy the Show!

COLIN COOK
It’s good to be back at Napier Operatic, following a 3-year break since playing Harold in The Full Monty, and I’m back in uniform (it stays on this time!) as the bad guy, Lockstock – a part I’ve always wanted to play. It’s been fantastic working with such talented directors and cast, and I dedicate my performance to another talented director, opera singer and music man – Paul Person.

CAST

KIM DAVEY
Having recently completed an LLB/BA majoring in Politics and Theatre from Victoria University, I returned to the Bay to try my hand at “the law game”. It did not take long to confirm that I am not a “behind-the-desk” kind of gal. Being a member of the Napier Operatic executive, co-production manager for Urinetown and part of this show has confirmed it – THEATRE is where the heart is! Enjoy!

FINN DINNEEN
Being a common toilet user, I generally take for granted the satisfying release and flush of everyday life, until my eyes were opened by Urinetown. Not the place of course, the musical. Hi I’m Finn and I currently attend Napier Boys’ High and have taken part in other Napier Operatic shows such as The Full Monty and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I hope you enjoy the show, and just remember – Urine Good Company.

SAMANTHA GRANT-SMITH
I am delighted to make Urinetown my comeback to Napier Operatic after a 5-year break. I now have two beautiful children, Cole and Sydney, who keep me very busy. Previous Napier Operatic shows include Les Miserables 2002 and Buddy 2003. I would like to thank my very understanding husband Greig for his love and support always.

KAREN GREEN
After playing Elsa in The Sound of Music at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House, I’m pleased to return to my ‘home theatre’.
My favourite roles to date include Rose in Gypsy, Madame Thenardier in Les Miserables, Mrs Lyons in Blood Brothers, Katisha in Mikado and Svetlana in Chess.
I am proud to have been involved with the Napier Operatic Society for nearly 30 years, serving the past 3 years on the executive.

ROD HARFORD
I am delighted to be part of another Napier Operatic Production and once again involved with a talented cast and production team.
It’s nearly 40 years since my first on-stage appearance and the efforts of cast and crew make a lie of the old saying “that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. Enjoy the show – I will.

CAST

ANDREW HODGSON
As a relative newcomer to Napier Operatic, Urinetown has been a great experience for me. The only other show I’ve participated in with Napier Operatic was Les Miserables, so this is a slight change of tone!
I’ve really loved working with such a talented cast, and hope to do so again in the not too distant future. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

EDINA MCFARALANE [McFARLANE]
“Split Enz meets 80s grunge at Urinetown?” Weird stuff you may think, but when Director Chris Davidson spoke of this show, he exuded so much excitement that it was not difficult to leap into another Napier Operatic production directed by him. Even Josiah my son loved the rhythms of “Snuff that Girl” and “What is Urinetown”. What a privilege to have performed In shows such as Buddy Holly, Full Monty, Beauty and the Beast and The Producers. It’s always so much fun meeting and performing alongside such talented people.

BOB SHELDRAKE
I always enjoy working at Napier Operatic as I know that the cast and crew will be 100% dedicated to producing the best possible show. The youngsters also help me feel young again. The last time Chris D and I worked together was at Napier Rep where we appeared together as two of four handicapped men in The Boys Next Door. I have enjoyed seeing other C.D. talents as this show has emerged. My last effort with Napier Operatic was in A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum.
We need shows like Urinetown to remind us not to take ourselves too seriously and we hope audiences enjoy the music as much as we do.

JOHN SPENCER
My love of musical theatre goes back nearly 30 years and I have played a range of roles, some of my favourites being KoKo in Mikado, Curly in Oklahoma! and Petruchio in Kiss Me Kate.
My wife Jen and I moved to Hawke’s Bay three years ago and soon got involved in Les Miserables with Waipawa and I recently played Nathan Detroit in their latest production of Guys and Dolls. This will be my second show with Napier Operatic having played a variety of cameo roles in The Producers earlier this year. I am very excited to be involved in Urinetown and wish the cast and crew all the best for the season.

NORA TENBROCK
I moved to Napier from Germany three years ago and have since been in two shows with Napier Operatic – Back to the 80s and Beauty and the Beast. I’ve always enjoyed the excitement of being on stage ever since I was a kid. It’s great to be part of “Urinetown” and I really hope the audience will enjoy it as much as I do!

CAST

DERRYN TOOMEY
From a background in dance, I was introduced to theatre at 12. I have been with Napier Operatic since 1991 and I have enjoyed many roles onstage, back stage, as kitchen hand or choreographer. I am thrilled to be in another show directed by Chris, having been in his cast of The Full Monty. The challenge of trying to sing/dance and act seriously in Urinetown with such a hilarious script and lyrics has been immense fun and i have loved every moment with such a great team.

GISA WILFARTH
My name is Gisa Wilfarth. I’m 17 years old and I come from Germany and I am attending William Colenso College for one year. This is my first show here. In Germany I joined a musical ensemble as well and I am glad that I can go on with it because I love to sing and dance.

“It’s just a fax/copy position, of course”
