Tropical Downbeat Orchestra
Funk, Soul, Jazz – 31 January
Brooding, hypnotic, jazz-infused notes and sophisticated improvisations weave seamlessly with an ultra-funky rhythm section. Introducing Tropical Downbeat Orchestra, the ‘Poets of Funk’. This Hawke’s Bay based creative collective have an eclectic repertoire rooted in dub, funky soul and jazz. The vocals of Margot Wuts are like a fresh wind blowing in off the tropical flow, the centrepiece around which the band weave their funky beats and jazzy grooves.
Cabin Fevre and the Kawekas (double bill)
Country, Folk, Bluegrass, Americana – 7 February
Cabin Fevre is a band unconfined by genre with influences from folk, bluegrass, country, blues, swing and R&B. They play original material while mixing it up with covers from artists as varied as Barry Saunders and Cindy Lauper. The band is made up of Setha Davenport (vocals & banjo), Roddy Branagan (vocals and mandolin), Ian Turbitt (guitar, harmonica and vocals) and Marty Forrer (upright bass). The ever popular Kawekas will play a set of country tunes mixed with some of their jazz infused flavours.
The New Zealand Singing School
Opera and Musical Theatre – 14 February
Showcasing students who have attended one or more singing school in the past, with songs covering both classical and music theatre. The New Zealand Singing School attracts 80 students from all over New Zealand and Australia. The 32 strong faculty of specialist vocal tutors and professional accompanists come from New Zealand, Australia, London, Sweden and Amsterdam, specialising in the crossover from Classical to Musical Theatre, as it is very important for singers to be able to deliver performance programmes covering both genres.
Devils Elbow and Mock Cream (double bill)
Rock, Country, Alt – 21 February
This will be a great afternoon with Devil’s Elbow – Alec Withers (vox, guitar), Ben Persen, (drums) John Hastings (bass) and Andrew Pearce (guitar) – presenting solid rock’n’roll with a hearty dose of hard-edged alt country rock. Mock Cream, a tribute band to the famous sound of Cream, will take you back to the highlife of the late sixties! Sunshine of your Love! Featuring James Rochester, (guitar) Dan Fulton (bass) and Joe Dobson (drums).
Confetti
Classical and beyond – 28 February
Confetti is a trio made up of Dana Parkhill and Emily Cargill on flute and Paula Sugden on cello. The members of this highly accomplished ensemble, who are also casual players with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, play everything from Bach to Blues, with many surprises in between. The combination of two flutes & cello brings a dynamic, sassy edge to their music.
