Programme – Neville’s Island

Napier Repertory Players presents

A MISMANAGED COMEDY

‘Neville’s Island’

Characters

Roy played by Roy Holderness

Unaccustomed as I am to public appearances, I seem to cast caution to the wind and agreed to perch in a tree. Quite a change from my last effort as one of the flannelled fools in “Outside Edge”, I may even live to regret this.

Angus played by Brent Fairlie

When I first read this play I instantly thought “Yes… youth, beauty, intelligence and rugged masculinity… would not be required so I can give it a go.” In truth, the closest I get to the well fitted out Angus with his new Mondeo and cellphone is a phone card and an old Valiant. However, through his character I feel my experience of the great New Zealand outdoor life has been broadened considerably. Now I can’t wait to experience more at home in front of the telly with a nice cup of tea by the fire… A self-igniting one of course.

Neville played by Murray Farquhar

Neville’s character vacillates between pathetically inept and ineptly pathetic. He intends, with the help of a compass to lead Team C towards the millennium or maybe oblivion, but certainly as far as the 18th of July.

Gordon played by Peter Pigott

I don’t normally get to write nice things about myself as Repertory programmes tell lots of untruths. I am enjoying playing the character of Gordon as I am not sarcastic or arrogant am I? The only thing in common is that I also have a duvet. P.S. I do really like Brent Fairlie.

A Word From the Director

I saw “Neville’s Island” performed in Tauranga in 1997 and on arrival home immediately wrote to Rep’s committee offering to direct it for Hawkes Bay audiences. I’m pleased to say they said “yes!”

An island was required and I can’t thank Tony Scott enough for his creation. As a result, some of the audience will see this play from a different perspective to that which they may be accustomed at The Little Theatre.

I have enjoyed the challenge of setting Neville’s Island” almost-in-the-round. The cast have thoroughly enjoyed watching Graham Stichbury paint the bush around them during rehearsals. The landscape gardener amongst their number wanted to know which brand of fertilizer he used! May I take this opportunity of thanking Gwyn Ace for accepting the not-very-straight-forward task of lighting the island and Sonya Aifai for packing Angus’s pack.

Enjoy.

The Action

The action takes place on Kereru Island in early November. Eleven of the 14 scenes are set on the small peninsula where our foursome first arrive, while the balance are set at the lookout tree some hundred metres away higher up on the island.
