Born Napier 18 January 1940, son of John Baird Rankin and Zella (nee Simmers). Married, two sons two daughters.
Educated Auckland University Master of Arts (Greek, Latin) 1965 (President, Auckland University Students Association 1962-63); Harvard University.

Director Programme on Agricultural Policy, Centre for Strategic and International Studies, 1978-80; NZ Planning Council 1980-82, Director 1982-90; Director, Inter-Planning (own company) 1990-; owner, working farm Wairarapa (sheep, goats, cattle); Current President Wellington Branch Federated Farmers.
