This Happened To Me: Kevin Longman told us of some recent caving experience near Waipu, and many interesting challenges involved. He spoke of 4 metre waterfalls, squeezing through confined spaces and plunging head first into deep pools. He’s learned that he’s not claustrophobic, and wishes that he’d started this 40-50 years ago.
Guest Speaker: Frank Cooper, Stoneycroft – The Knowledge Bank: After showing us a short introductory film Frank explained the purpose of The Knowledge Bank – it’s a repository for local historical community information, to which mostly local people, often from old HB families, bring assorted contributions. These range from films and small snippets of hand written notes, through to box loads, and also is often in verbal format which is recorded before being transcribed. TNB makes permanent records and indexes all the data and backs up at four separate locations around NZ. They have direct links to National Archives and National Library. TNB started in 2012, and located at Stoneycroft, 901 Omahu Rd, which is owned by HDC and leased to the HB Digital Archives Trust. Annual running costs of $30,000 – $40,000 are funded by membership, trusts and donations. All staff are volunteers. Frank has been involved since retiring, and much of his time has been interviewing contributors. Stoneycroft is open 10am-4pm weekdays, and more information is at [www].knowledqebank.org.nz
FROM THE PRESIDENT’S PEN
Frank showed us his new career. We are lucky to have people with his enthusiasm & empathy to keep these stories alive. I am sure that he would be very happy to hear from anyone with some spare time.
