Dear Sir,

On the 16th of June next the Lions Clubs within the area of the HB Hospital Board are conducting, in conjunction with Radio New Zealand a public appeal for $124,000 to enable the purchase of a diagnostic ultrasound body scanner. The need for this highly sophisticated electronic equipment in this district is recognised by both Central Government and the Hospital Board, but funds are simply not available at the present time for it. It employs the principles of sound reflection developed during the last war for submarine detection but vastly refined with the aid of modern developments. Its aid in the early diagnosis and recognition of a wide range of illnesses is now well accepted in the medical community. I enclose a brief pamphlet which indicates its versatility and value.

I am writing to acquaint your Club with the fact of the appeal and to seek its support. The sum of money which is required to be found is large indeed and we feel we must look not only to the general public but to fellow Service Clubs and Organisations within this area to be able to obtain our target. May I ask that you place this letter before your committee for their earnest consideration as soon as possible. Should you require further information would you please let me know.
