VICARS LETTER.
My dear Parishioners,
A new year commences, and it is natural that we should begin it with hopes and plans for making a good year. The first need that comes to mind is the young people’s. The work of our Sunday School needs the assistance of extra teachers, and the co-operation of parents in sending their children every Sunday. The name applies to our Bible Classes. The membership needs to be greatly increased. This part of Parish life needs immediate attention, and there must be some of you who are willing to offer their help.

With regard to the Services at Church I am glad to say that Dean Gibson is going to give us his help as Honorary Assistant Parish priest, and I am very

St. Matthews (2)

grateful for this help. Mr. J. A. Trindall, our Organist, has been licensed by the Archbishop to help me at Holy Communion by administering the Chalice. This is a great help at the Celebrations. We congratulate him on his success in the recent Theological Examinations when he passed in all three subjects which he offered. I am grateful to Mr. Frank Scott and Mr. Arthur Giorgi for taking Mattins and Evensong for me on two Sundays in January to enable me to get away for a holiday, and to Canon Hall, the Rev. John Roe and the Rev. Alan Pywell for taking the Celebrations of Holy Communion.

Lent begins on March 3rd and so we have a chance to get settled down before it comes. I hope we shall all make a special effort this year to observe this Season well. Dean Gibson is taking a special course of Sermons on the Sunday evenings and will be conducting the Three Hour Service on Good Friday. You will find the sermons and the service very helpful. I hope that this year’s Lent will be the best kept that we have ever had in this Parish.

In March most of the Parish organizations will resume their activities. The C.E.M.S. will have already commenced on the last Wednesday in February.

We had good Services over Christmas, especially on Christmas Day, and our Carol Service on the following Sunday was a wonderful Service. Our thanks go to Mr. Trindall and his Choir. We were all greatly helped by the way they led us in the Service. Also, I am grateful to the Choir for the way they have attended during the holiday period. They deserve our thanks. We are too inclined to take their work for granted. I do hope new members will join this year. It is a very great service they do for the glory of God and the worship of His Church.

The Services have been very encouraging over this period. I do hope you will go on from here to still better things in this New Year. Let us all join together in making further progress in the days ahead.

Your sincerely
KENNETH F. BUTTON.

ALTAR FLOWERS. – February 7:   Miss Stubbs. 14 Mrs. Northe. 21 Mrs. Hay. 28 Mrs. Harvey.
March:   7 Mrs Coop. 14 Mrs. Farquharson. 21 Mrs. June.

WOMEN’S GUILD. – The first meeting in 1965 will be held on Tuesday, March 2nd, at 2.15 p.m.
New members will be very welcome, in fact, necessary, if the Guild is to continue to function efficiently. It has done much for the Parish in the past, and an increase in membership will enable it to do even more in the future.

AFTERNOON MOTHERS’ UNION. – The first meeting in 1965 will be held on the second Tuesday in March, the 9th, at 2 p.m.
As this will be the Annual Meeting, all members are urged to attend in order to elect the new Committee and to consider this year’s programme.
Members are also reminded that the World Day of Prayer will be Friday March 5th.   I.M.L.

YOUNG WIVES GROUP. – Our first meeting of the year will be held in the Guild Room on March 4th at 7.45 p.m. This will be the Annual General Meeting, and old and new members will be most welcome.
The Christmas Party, held in December, was most successful, and all present seemed to enjoy themselves. The programme was a varied one. Lily Bignall produced the play

“No Tears for Henry,” which was presented by the Evening Mothers’ Union. The Young Wives put on a “Hat Parade,” by courtesy of McAra’s Ltd. Our thanks go to Jo Fletcher, who so ably compered the parade. June Bacon and five Evening Mothers’ Union members did a short mime, entitled “The Christmas Guest.” Then Elizabeth and Stephanie Norton sang a bracket of songs. They certainly have delightful voices. Thank you, girls. Supper by candlelight with festive decorations and food on the tables concluded an enjoyable meeting.

I should like to take this opportunity of thanking the committee for their help and support throughout the year. To Alisoun Werry, on behalf of the group, I offer a big “Thank you” for the able way in which she has led the group during the past year. We look forward to many more pleasant meetings under her leadership.   J. C.

C.E.M.S. – Members are reminded that the 1965 activities will begin at the meeting on Wednesday, February 24, when there will be something of interest for everyone. We remind parishioners that, although we are always looking for new members, our meetings are open to all men.

CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT. – In past years the Carol Service has been held on the Sunday before Christmas, but last year, ie. 1964, it was held on the Sunday after Christmas. There may have been fears in the minds of some of us that holidays could affect the attendance, but the congregation was as large as in former years. Perhaps the Sunday’s coming so soon after Christmas had a wholesome effect.

As always, the recital by the choir was delightful, and, not to be out-done, the congregations made its presence heard in the hymns. The candlelight, the Christmas tree, the crib, and the flowers, all assisted the choir to give us the message of Christmas.

The nine lessons were read by youthful and adult members of the choir, a warden and the Vicar.

To Mr. Trindall and his choir we offer our appreciation and gratitude for their gift to us.

THE VISIT OF THE REV. R. E. MARSDEN. – Wednesday, January 13th, was a red-letter day in the history of St. Matthew’s, for on that day the Rev. and Mrs R. E. Marsden came to spend a day with us. Mr. Marsden, the great-great-grandson of Samuel Marsden, had preached on Christmas Day at Oihi beach, 150 years after his illustrious ancestor, Samuel Marsden, had preached the first sermon in New Zealand on the same spot.

Mr. Marsden preached at Evensong on the day and took as his theme “God is Love and Love is God.” He then went on to show the large congregation that his presence in New Zealand was no mere accident. It was the result of Divine Providence. He was not one of those who believed that if there had not have been a certain train of events he would not have been with us. There were no “ifs” in Gods purpose.

Almost the whole congregation came to the Hall after the service to meet the Rev. and Mrs. Marsden. Both of them made it very plain that they wanted to meet as many people as possible, and so heartily was their invitation accepted that we wondered whether they had time to drink a cup of tea. As always on such occasions we wished their stay was longer.

St. Matthew’s (6)

A pleasing feature of the evening was the presence of a large Maori contingent headed by that redoubtable Christian patriarch, Ihakara (“Ike”) Robin, who never lets his disability interfere with his devotions. The presence of him and his people made the Marsden service complete.

The collection, a generous one, went to the Church Missionary Society, a gesture applauded by our visitors.

The Parish is grateful to the band of ladies in the kitchen who fed the multitude in the Hall so speedily and efficiently; also to the Maori girls and boys who were so helpful at supper and afterwards. Someone has trained them well.

In conclusion, we offer our thanks to the Rev. and Mrs. Marsden for their visit to us, and for the friendship they so freely gave us. We hope that when they return to Cornwall and their work in Penzance they will have happy memories of their stay in New Zealand. They can be sure that New Zealand and St. Matthew’s will long remember them.

We know that pride is one of the deadly sins, but we cannot refrain from recording that our visitors both loved the character and the atmosphere of our Church.

PERSONAL. – We are very pleased to report that Archdeacon Young wrote on his Christmas card that he flourishes “like the weeds in the garden.” On the envelope he used one of the health stamps that depict two New Zealand birds, and said he chose it as from one downy old bird to another. We regret to record that we took it is a compliment and not as an insult.

We congratulate Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Trindall on having celebrated their Silver Wedding anniversary, and hope that the card and good wishes from the Parish reached them before Sunday, January 17th. With some reluctance we refrain from “The first 25 years etc.”

Just before Christmas we had a long and most interesting letter from Mrs. Gerald Scott, whose assistance in editing the St. James section of the newsletter we have not forgotten. The Scott family is finding life in Fiji full of infinite variety, and some surprises. The news we welcome is that they have had a kindly reception on all sides.

The news that Dean O. S. O. Gibson is to assist with services in St. Matthew’s this year is good news for all of us. His presence amongst us and his assistance to the Vicar will be most welcome. We shall do our utmost to make him feel that he is part of St. Matthew’s.

The Vicar and his family are now spending a fortnight’s holiday at Paraparaumu. We hope that the weather is kind to them, and that the Vicar and his wife will have a real spell. They have earned it. Of late, we respectfully suggest, they have been laying up too many treasures in Heaven.

Jill Button, in company with two other trained nurses, is leaving shortly for a working holiday in Britain and the Continent. We hope they don’t run out of patients.

One of those who took services in St. Matthew’s during the holiday period was the Rev. John Roe. When we offered him thanks, he replied that he owed us something. He recently married Miss Noelene D’Ott, who also served St. Matthew’s well.

AN APPEAL. – It may not be generally known, but Abbotsford, an Anglican home for girls and boys from 5-16 years, is always grateful for any good

LOST. – During the Christmas period two large pieces of scrim on which the Church decorators used to assemble their flowers disappeared. It is possible that one of the band inadvertently removed them or took them home. Finder, please report to the Parish Office.

THE THINGS THEY SAY.- Looking at his baby brother, a boy said to his father, “Why doesn’t Tommy talk?”
“He’s too young,” said Dad. “Children so little never talk.”
“Oh yes they do,” replied the boy.
“We learned in Sunday School last week that Job cursed the day he was born.”
[When this story was told to us, “Jonah” was susbstituted [substituted] for “Job”. We’re glad to refute the slander. – Ed.]

EDITORIAL NOTE. – Good wishes for 1965 to all our contributors and readers. Health first and the rest does not matter, much.
As parish organizations have not yet resumed activities, we are short of copy, but that is our usual experience in January. We’re temporarily editor, cub reporter, and printer’s devil.

The deadline for March copy is Tuesday, February 23rd. Contributors we hope, will be on the job again by that time.
