Born Richmond, Nelson, 17 May 1939, son of Harold Gordon Thawley and Edna (nee Blanche); married Dorothy Jane Howe, daughter of Mr and Mrs A H Howe, 1968; one son, two daughters.
Educated: Havelock North Primary School; Hastings High School; NZ Pharmacy College, MPS, PhC 1961; Canterbury University Bachelor of Arts 1965; Otago University, Bachelor of Divinity 1968; Knox Theological Hall, Diploma of Theology 1967.
