We have much pleasure in announcing that we have now settled down in our new and extensive premises in Heretaunga-street, between two Banks, where we have much greater facilities than heretofore for carrying on the various branches of our constantly increasing business. New lines constantly arriving, thus keeping our plant up-to-date in every particular. We invite inspection.

BY THE NARK

A FRIEND of mine named Cook has a very nice vinery, and a few days ago a tradesman took a visitor from the south down to see it. The day was the Sawbath, but that did not prevent the proprietor from doing a bit of trade; especially as his wife and family were at church at the time, keeping up the household name for piety and decorum. As each person’s turn came the vigneron took down a bunch of grapes and also a pair of scissors. The visitor from down south thought the man was going to cut off the odd green ones to make the bunches look decent; but he didn’t know the way they deal on a Sunday in Hawkes Bay. Cook put each bunch on the scale and carefully clipped off a grape at the time until the bunch weighed one pound and not a fraction more. Next night we went to a school committee meeting and helped to frame rules for guiding the young in the path of virtue, and remind them of those words in the good book about “ pressed down and running over,” etc.

A very good story reaches me which has the merit of truth about it. It happened not may miles from Hastings. A friend of mine was doing some public business, in the course of which he happened to call upon a Presbyterian family of the old school, and as it was about noon the lady of the house suggested he had better stay for dinner. He accepted the invitation gladly, and in due time sat down to a meal.

THE N.Z. BULLETIN.   3

During the course of this he got somewhat elaborate expartiating on the good things before him, and of the kindness of the family generally, in placing such excellent fare at his disposal. The lady on her part went back to old times, and told how her father had never allowed a stranger to go away wanting, and always offered the best he had to anyone who happened to had come a distance. “Unless’ added the mater, roster, “he happened to be a Catholic!” A daughter of the house turned around to her mother and asked, Don‘t you know Mr – is a Catholic?” The conversation dropped suddenly.

OWING to circumstances beyond our control, owing to the way in which it is done (full particulars available at office) the publication of the Bulletin in full size has been prevented for a week or two. We are pleased to be able to state, however that lovers of liberty and free speech have come forward from most unexpected quarters, proffering assistance in small sums – sufficient to place matters on a real good foundation, and ensure the publication of at least one paper in the district which is not afraid of cliques and combinations of evil doers. We have sustained a loss of £400 in cash, but with health, strenght [strength] and a determination to keep on fighting for the right, we both look upon personal loss of money as a mere bagatelle. We fight for the people, and have every confidence they will see that justice is done in return.

4   THE N.Z. BULLETIN.

What Happened to Jones ?
Why he got such a shock when he saw all that new type and machines going into the Bulletin Office that he has been dreadfully sick ever since. Jones has got ’em bad. And the dirty crew who have been writing letters (one of them was a schoolmaster – according to the chief robber) turned fairly putrid, and have since developed a veritable thirst for long beers to assuage their grief. It’s a good thing for Dan!
