THE YEAR’S ACTIVITIES AND GENERAL INFORMATION

School commenced with a roll of 34: 14 Juniors and 20 Seniors.
School visited by Mr DW Sheppard and Mr P Hogan for triennial school inspection.

MARCH   Swimming sports held at Sherenden School. Waiwhare 4th.
Visits by Health Nurse, Miss R Low, and Rev. K McGechie.
Mrs Richards took over the work of Junior Red Cross teacher.
Baths cleaned and paintwork patched.

APRIL   A social evening was held at the school house for the retiring committee.
Junior class visited Hastings Fire Station and NZBC studio and were interviewed by announcer John Crawford.
Biennial General Meeting of Householders to elect a new school committee.
D&A Sports Day at Matapiro. For the first time the athletic events were run as inter-school competition, not as houses.
Visit from Mr G Cass, Adviser to Rural Schools, and Miss Easton from Argyll East.

MAY   Visit from two school dental nurses to inspect children’s teeth, including pre-schoolers over 2.
Junior class visited Hastings Police Station.

JUNE   Winter sports under way.
Senior class travelled to Hastings to view film “Anne of a Thousand Days”.
Hearing and vision survey of Form 2 pupils. Whole school photographed for publicity for Post Office Savings Week.

JULY   Infants-S2 attended a performance of Walt Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”.
Reports issued S2-F2.

AUGUST   Both classes attended a police dog demonstration at Pukehamoamoa School.
Combined Rep. games v Havelock North at Pukehamoamoa School.
Farewell party for Mrs McDonald put on by children. Pupils presented her with a gift and a special cake.

SEPTEMBER   Mrs S Comrie relieving, in Junior room.
Visit from Mr S Adsett, Gisborne Art & Craft Adviser to make preparations for 3 weeks of art & craft work 2 days a week.

OCTOBER   Traffic Instructor Mr CO Farmer visited the school and showed a road safety film
Summer Sports begun.

NOVEMBER   Head Teacher attended a week long National In-Service Language Course in Christchurch. Mrs McDonald relieved for him. Mrs Ridgway, Mrs Gawler and Mrs Tolley relieved in Junior room

DECEMBER   School notified of appointment of Miss P O’Donnell to Junior room next year.
No items at the break-up ceremony owing to the succession of relievers in Junior room. Instead, a pupils v parents softball game was head [held].  Guest speaker was Mr J Grant, PO Public Relations Officer. Rev. McGechie was also a guest. Visit from M L Moss, Maintenance Officer from the Education Board to advise that the following work will be done during the school holidays:
Flooring of Junior room – carpet and vinyl.
Blackboards in senior room.
Flooring of school toilets.
Bench in kitchen of school house.

 

The juniors decided to make their own boats and have boat races after reading “Boat Day” in the Departmental readers

Junior class – developmental time

This shield was designed in the latter part of 1970 and first used in 1971 as a badge sewn on to sports shirts and blouses. There is also a wooden representation attached to the front of the school.

Waiwhare School, 31 miles from Hastings on the Taihape Rd, is one of the schools which received a small grant from the Post Office Savings Bank. The school committee had been saving for some time to buy a replacement piano and with the assistance of the grant was able to buy one recently. Picture shows the husband and wife teacher team, Mr and Mrs JA McDonald, with pupils of the school during a singing session yesterday.
