School ‘snow problem’
Why worry about school?  It was no problem for these children yesterday under a 10cm blanket of snow turned the Waiwhare school grounds into a winter wonderland.
These children had a ball as they dreamed up new games to make use of the powder snow – including a competition to make the biggest snowball.
Principal Mr Tony Simons said it was the first time in six years that snow had fallen there.
The school is 50km from Hastings on the Taihape road, just 370 metres above sea level.
Desert Road closed:  The Desert Road is closed and heavy traffic is reported in the Central North Island, the Automobile Association said today.
Highway 47 which runs off the National Park road to the Chateau Tongariro is reported to be marginal.  Highway 47A is also marginal.
Also closed is Highway 3 running from Te Kuiti to New Plymouth.  It is closed due to a slip 10km south of Piopio.
In the South Island all roads in Otago were open again today after the heaviest snow in the region for many years created havoc yesterday.

Snow chills Hawke’s Bay
Snow is closing in on Hawke’s Bay with one area experiencing its first snowfall in five years.
Taihape Road’s Waiwhare School principal Tony Simons said this morning once parent came to pick up a child at school because 8cm of snow had fallen on a nearby farm.
The school had its first snowfall in about 5 years this morning although rain washed it away within half an hour.
A heavy coating of snow was reported at the Tarawera Tavern on the Napier-Taupo Road late this morning and conditions on the road are treacherous.
Snow fell at Norsewood for two hours this morning but melted almost as soon as it touched the ground.
Heavy snow shuts roads – Page 4.

And they’re off …

All Black centre Matt Cooper, far left, is among the leaders at the start of yesterday’s annual ANZ Bank Hastings-Napier relay fun run which raised nearly $3000 for St John Ambulance.
A total of 269 teams (1076 runners) ran the half marathon distance with a Napier harriers quartet first across the Napier finish line in around 1 hour 5 minutes.
Hawke’s Bay Presbyterian harriers were only three or four metres behind a Railways team a distant third.
Three hundred spot prizes were dished out with eight 10-speed bikes going to Fruit Federation and HBEPB Geriatric teams.
Lions club members joined the ANZ Bank in a joint venture for the first time and nearly 80 Lions – including 40 from the Napier Host club and 25 from Hastings – were involved in the organisation.
Napier Host president Mr Brian Cotter said that despite the wet weather the third annual run was a great success.

Dear Constable Simmons [Simmonds],

I loved the trip on Friday.  The part I liked best was the watch house.  I liked it because it had so much technology to see.  The Court house was neat too.  Police are not as [I] thought they would be.  They don’t always carry guns.  They help people mostly.  I learnt more about police on our trip.  I liked the ride in the police car.  Thanks a whole lot for organising the day for us.  The tug was good as well.

Yours Sincerely
Callum McRae

Dear Mr Campbell

Thank you for showing us the things you use in emergencies and for giving us some of your equipment.  I like the loud siren and the control room.  I would like to be an ambilance [ambulance] person when I grow up.  I like the microphone.  Thank you for everything.

yours sincerely
Berett [Brett] Gunson.

Dear Constable Campbell

Thank you for showing us around the jail in the police station.  The jail was uncomfortable.  It would be nice if we could go there again some time.  We went to the Cor [Court] house with Constable Simmons.  Then we went to the police station where we went to the police jails.  Then we went to pizza Hut for lunch.  We went to the beach for a walk and I found a crab leg and then we went to the tug and there was a ship unloading super-phosphat[e].  Constable Simmons makes a good waiter in restaurants.

Then we went to the cars and went home.

Yours Sincerely,
Andrew Clarke.

Dear Constable Campbell

Thank you for showing us the cells.  On our trip to the court, I was sentenced to fourteen years of […].  So I wouldn’t like to go to jail.  So I think I’ll stay good for ever.  The verandah was a pretty rotten place to get some fresh air.  The new police cars are flash.  After we went to Pizza Hut, we went to the playground.  Then we went to the tug boat.  We saw the engine that went under water.  The tug boat was also a fire boat.  It had a big cannon on top of the tug.  There was another tug that was twice as small as the tug that that were on.  There was a super phosphate ship that was unloading super phosphate.  There were cranes that unloaded the phosphate.  The truck went under the bunkers that’s where the crane unlocked the phosphate.  Then we went home.

Yours sincerely Neil Fountaine.
