And they’re off…

All Black centre Matt Cooper, far left, is among the leaders at the start of yesterday’s annual ANZ Bank Hastings-Napier relay fun ran which raised nearly $3000 for St John Ambulance.

A total of 269 teams (1076 runners) ran the half marathon distance with a Napier harriers quartet first across the Napier finish line in around 1 hour 5 minutes.

Hawke’s Bay Presbyterian harriers were only three or four metres behind with a Railways team a distant third.

Three hundred spot prizes were dished out with eight 10-Speed bikes going to Fruit Federation and HBEPB Geriatric teams.

Lions club members joined the ANZ Bank in a joint venture for the first time and nearly 80 Lions – including 40 from the Napier Host club and 25 from Hastings – were involved in the organisation.

Napier Host president Mr Brian Cotter said that despite the wet weather the third annual run was a great success.
