9 February The whole school went to Westshore Surf Life-saving Club for a day of beach education, run by Sport Hawke’s Bay. The 29 children were divided into 3 groups and after initial discussion about identifying beach hazards and slip slop slapping as well as putting on sunscreen, they went away to partake in beach activities on a round robin basis. This involved boogie board sprints, relays, sandcastles and rescue tubes. We began at 10am and finished at 2pm. Very good support and attendance by mothers.
10 February Swimming Sports at Sherenden School. Began at 10.30 with children in the NE – S1 area swimming first. Two children for health reasons were unable to swim. 12.15 the senior school, S2 – F2, were having their races. The children had only 4 swimming days to training due to the weather and beach day. Would pay to remind them at the end of the year to do some training during the holidays. The children all gave it their best effort and had lots of fun. A realty hot and sunny day for a change.
14 February Valentine’s Day. Margaret and I attended the first in-service day for the Maths Curriculum contract. Marjorie Unwin relieved in the junior room and Keren Wallace in the senior class. Corey Bullock moved into town and so the roll is 29.

12 April Novice gym festival. Tamatea Intermediate. Margaret took participants who were all the junior class.
13 April I attended Maths in School Journals course. Keren Wallace relieved. Whole school went to town for Aim Book Week activities. Junior class saw Lyn Kriegler with puppets and stories. Senior class heard Joy Cowley at Heretaunga Intermediate – very hot and stuffy and not particularly interesting.
14 April Margaret attended new entrant programme course and I attended 2nd afternoon EOTC course, both in afternoon so Keren relieved and took whole school
15 April Visit by Tony Turfrey, maths facilitator. School all had “Breakfast at School” with senior class preparing in groups an item for breakfast.

3 May Held a gym display in the afternoon at school to make up for the disappointment of missing the festival.
5 May Went to Sherenden hall in the afternoon to see Masquerade Theatre perform “The Paper Bag Princess”.
TERM 2, 1994
23 May Two new entrants enrolled today. Rochine de Vries and Rachel d’Ath, making the roll 33. Std 2s moved into the senior room, making the balance 22 seniors and 11 juniors. Mrs Margaret Henricksen began her position as full time permanent Scale A teacher at Waiwhare School.
24 May Keren Wallace relieved in the senior class. Bus company meeting was held in the evening.
26 May Margaret attended the New Wave folk dancing course and Keren relieved in the junior room. Winter sports began with first session being at Waiwhare. Due to large numbers of Std 2s and 3s they are split into groups so there are 5 sports with each group doing one per afternoon: rugby, netball, hockey, small games or cross-country running if you’re at Waiwhare.
6.30pm a meeting was held at Sherenden Hall for all BOT members of the four schools. Dave Robb of STA ran it to talk about concerns that affect Boards of rural schools.
27 May First Friday 2-3pm assembly was held and taken by Margaret. The idea is for the whole school to get together and share their work and ideas and to do some singing etc together. Also to alternately release teachers for planning time.
28 May Working bee was held under terrible weather conditions but a great deal was accomplished. Tree by schoolhouse tank was removed and cut up for firewood. Other trees were trimmed and 8 new ones planted. Netting was put at the top of the volleyboard. Hedge was trimmed. Area where old septic tank was, was filled in, leveled and cleared.
During the week contractors had been replacing doors around the school, repairing walls and re-roofing the old library toilets and sheds.
The junior room had new carpet put down during the school holidays.
30 May Maths teacher development seminar which both Margaret and I had to attend. Marjorie Unwin and Keren Wallace relieved.
1 June Whole school went up to Blowhard Bush as part of the forest study. Despite poor weather at school it was very sheltered and although cold, not unpleasant at all. Needed more time than allowed to explore despite not being a huge area and will go again soon.
Andrew Webster enrolled today.
3 June Louise Bishop relieving in senior class.
6 June Kate Holden, music adviser, visited in the morning with Margaret to discuss ideas for the music programme. Lyn Elliott minded the junior class. Winter sports were to be at Sherenden but cancelled due to wet weather.
10 June Principal’s release, Louise Bishop, takes senior class. A very successful assembly with the children very enthusiastic about string games and action poi dances. Children interacting very well – helping each other to learn new patterns, following instructions well and highly motivated.
13 June Principals’ meeting with 3 other local schools. Decision made to enter teams in the 7-a-side rugby tournament.
15 June Margaret attended a day’s course for the music handbooks in the junior area. Louise Bishop relieved.
16 June I was sick today, Mrs Unwin relieving. Winter sports at Pukehamoamoa cancelled due to wet weather. BOT meeting at night.
17 June Margaret took assembly, which went extremely well.
22 June Margaret attended afternoon course for music handbooks. Lyn Elliott minded the children.
23 June Winter sports at Waiwhare held in fine weather but cold wind.
24 June Another successful assembly held by Mrs Bishop. Group of seniors had rugby practice taken by Mr Kelleher in preparation for the 7-a-side tournament. Maureen Grapes called in and weighed and measured the new entrants. Katrina De Vries leaves next Monday for health camp. Very excited and looking forward to it. She will be away for 6 weeks.
27 June Interviews began this week.
28 June 7-a-side rugby tournament at Hastings Boys’ High. We were to have entered one full team with extras combining with Sherenden & Crownthorpe to form another. However, the Waiwhare team registration was overlooked by myself and only 4 boys, F2s and F1s, were sent in for the combined team. They had an extremely enjoyable day, winning all but one of their games. To make up for the disappointment, boys are to be taken to the France vs Hawke’s Bay match on Wednesday and a mini tournament will be organised with the other schools.

29 June Snow fell overnight, leaving the district as far as Otamauri blanketed. School closed for the day due to the Glenross and top of Taihape Roads icy, dangerous conditions for the bus. Trip to the rugby match still went ahead for the boys but very bitterly cold spectator conditions.
“toots ‘n’ tunes” concert still held that night at Sherenden Hall.
30 June 7pm parents’ meeting held with a very good turnout and a very full agenda. The children were minded in the arts room with videos.
2 July Mid-term break begins – one week.
13 July Strike action held over pay claims for parity with secondary teachers. Teachers attended a meeting held at the Municipal Theatre.
14 July Kiwisports day at Crownthorpe. Beautiful perfect weather. Children rotated round orienteering, rugby, hockey, soccer and indoor bowls. Children and teachers thoroughly enjoyed themselves, showed excellent behaviour. Waiwhare earned five Fair Play awards and two of our children were fastest in their groups for the orienteering.
3pm Maths facilitator Judy Rasmussen called to see Margaret and myself.
18 July Principals’ meeting at Sherenden.
19 July “Kiwisport Olympic Day” – this was to be for 12 9-11 year olds but as the F1 boys had played 7-a-side rugby we decided to include a few of the 8 year old Std 2s. The team of 12 represented Australia and made up a costume, flag and medals to take. They had to leave by 8am to be in Napier by 9. They went through an opening ceremony then a rotation of sports followed by a fun run, then closing ceremony, returning home in time for the bus run. An enjoyable day experienced by children and parents.
21 July Winter sports at Pukehamoamoa – practice for Ngaruroro tournament.
22 July Held the 7-a-side mini tournament against the 3 other schools. Games were 5 to 7 minutes each way. Everyone played everyone else. Waiwhare did extremely well. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Combined 15-a-side, Pukehamoamoa against the other 3 at the end. Recommended we do the same next year but prior to the town tournament as a practice.
Readathon competition finishes today.
28 July Gym Fun Day, Omni Gym centre, Onekawa. We needed to take the whole school in at the same time because of buses and transport as the juniors were in the morning and seniors in the afternoon. Other activities arranged were the Art gallery/Museum and All-Brite recycling. We arrived to find that they were running 1/2 an hour late and because of numbers there was no room to watch. It turned out to be quite a disorganised day.
1 August Fire Service came out today with the County Fire Engine, which was a talking engine. Covered fire safety from 11-12.30 with the Junior NE – Std 1 class.
4 August Royce Lincoln came out to test the Fls for hearing and colour vision and the new entrants as well as any others who had requested testing for their children. Winter sports were held at Sherenden. Practice for the winter tournament.
5 August Peter and Pauline Davis were casual enrolments for the day, with the possibility of them becoming permanent. Both children are in the junior class, being J1 and Std 1.
11 August The winter tournament between the small schools on both sides of the river was held at Mangatahi – rugby and netball; Raukawa – hockey and soccer. Unfortunately the majority of our side wished to play the first two sports. The weather was perfect with brilliant sunshine. Netball was slightly unmatched as Kereru and Mangatahi fielded their own teams while ours were mixed from all four schools, with some children not having played before. They still managed to get in a lot of games that were enjoyable, and the rugby players managed to get very dirty!!
13 August Both teachers attended a full day’s course on mathematics at Ruawharo Campus which had Dianne Barrows – Fullbright scholar, as the guest speaker. A very informative and practical course.
15 August John Medcalf, SES, came to assess Matthew Marfell and reviews his IEP Plan. I had a quick word with him re learning disabilities and he talked about his peer tutoring in written language programme.
16 August Elesha Purcell, Amy Roil and Amy Roydhouse joined the Sherenden netball players in a tournament in Hastings, having a very successful day and winning their section. From 7-9pm in the evening a spelling course was held by Sandra MacDonald, reading and language adviser for Hawke’s Bay. It covered the way children develop their spelling skills and how the school programme can foster this. It also showed how the thinking about how we lean to spell has changed over the years.
18 August A fun afternoon of folk dancing at Sherenden School with the other 3 schools. Waiwhare superbly demonstrated the Jiffy Mixer and Jibidi.
19 August Mrs Louise Bishop’s last day as principal’s release teachers as she leaves for Wellington, to live, during the holidays.
26 August Last day of Term 2. The whole school had a very pleasant afternoon exploring Blowhard Bush as a treat for being such wonderful children.

We returned at 2pm to school. Excellent weather.

All the relay teams did well but we had to scratch around for adults in the parents’ relay and had to draw on one of our older students, Scott Goulding, to run.

This year the juniors performed “Peter and the Wolf” and the seniors put on “The International Stewed Rhubarb Show”. This was then followed by speeches from some of the children. Prize giving then carol singing.
12 December School photos taken this morning by Jamie Lawson, who kindly helped us out although school photography is not his line – but we were missed out this year when the usual photographer did Sherenden and Crownthorpe but not us.
13-14 December Divided school into 4 groups of 8 which then spent 1 ½ hours on 2 Christmas activities before moving on to the next one. Covered 8 different activities over the two mornings. Had mother helps and Vicky Barnett as well as staff. Made fudge, cross-stitch, boxes, bells, dough decorations, cards, crackers, tinsel trees and snowmen.
