WAIWHARE WIRE

Dear Everyone,

School Roll.
The roll has reached 47 and we welcome Timmy Kyle to school as our latest enrolment.

Gymnastics.
The gymnastics festival was held during the last week of the term. A number of pupils participated at both venues. Younger pupils gained very good marks in the novice section held at Flaxmere Intermediate while the older pupils performed very well at the Centennial Hall in Napier. The team of four from Waiwhare School gained a sixth placing overall, an excellent achievement considering this was the first time the school has entered this competition. Twenty seven schools had entered this section of the competition. Many thanks to Debbie Schaw and Pam for all their help and work with the gymnastics.

Fancy Dress.
The school’s fancy dress ball was held at the Kaweka Forestry Hall. Dances were performed by the children and most of the parents were involved as well. The evening was a great success and I’d like to thank you all for coming and making the evening so enjoyable.

School Slide.
The school committee has installed a new slide at the school. This has been constructed against the north end of the fort. Initially the children wanted the slide to leave the top storey of the fort, shoot over the dressing shed roof and end up in the pool, but we finally persuaded them that the present site will have to do.

School Fees.
Many thanks to those of you who have paid the school fees.
For tax purposes reciepts [receipts] will be issued on request. Please ring Mrs Eatwell.

Teachers Aide.
Congratulations to Marion Croad who has got a terms teaching at Sherenden School. Unfortunately it means the school loses it’s Teachers Aide. This position is available for five hours per week. Duties include filing, typing and general clerical work, finding & returning resource material for the teachers, preparing charts, song sheets etc. Written applications will be accepted by the School Committee by the 19th September. Please state any experience you feel may be relevant to the position.

Cot Death Appeal.
Adrian [Adrienne] McCaslin is collecting for ‘Bike for Life’, a Cot Death Appeal. If you miss Adrian when she calls and would like to donate to this worthy cause please send your donation along to school.

Competition.
In the latest Listener a Competition for schools to win a Commodore Computer, is advertised. For each small CINDERELLA raisin packet sent in you have one chance to win and the two larger packets give you either 10 or 20 chances. If you use this brand we would appreciate if the empty packets could be sent along to school – the competition closes on Friday 31st October. You never know your luck.

Rata Olsen Scout Group.
We’ll be meeting at Matapiro Hall on Sunday 14th at 1 pm. All those interested very welcome. Bring your smoko too.

Indoor Cricket.
Waiwhare indoor cricket team is now almost assured of a place in the semi final of the Monday night league, after a nail biting finish, running out the winners by 97 runs to 85 over Odlins.
Tony Simons and Roger white [White] managed one of their better partnerships of 33 runs, only to be eclipsed by Ping Lawrence and Andrew Ward who hit a total of 34 runs. The rest of the batting is not worth mentioning. Mike Barnett figured well with the ball, bagging a total of six wickets in his two overs for an excellent minus 14 off his bowling.
Denis [Dennis]

Dance.
The Badminton Club dance held at Sherenden Hall last month was very successful and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. As is often the case with such occasions, there were doubts about actual numbers attending due to an initial poor response to ticket sales – but on the night there were plenty of people of all ages, who enjoyed wining and dining and dancing to the music of the first-class band “Rumours”.
A presentation was made during the evening to Evan Robson, a keen and able player who was with us for 3½ years.
Supper, made by club members and wives (and Liz) was served at mid night and followed by more dancing until 2 am. The hall was tastefully decorated thanks to Waiwhare School children and the big boys at the dance had great fun trying to reach the balloons suspended in a fishing net above the dance floor.
As this dance is one of the only occasions that adults from Waiwhare to town get a chance to get together and let their hair down it is hard to understand why it is not supported better than what it is and future dances are in jeopardy as a result. However, the Badminton Club did manage a small profit on the night and we all felt the hard work was well worth the effort.

Spinning Group.
Our local spinning group has had a very quiet year, meetings alternating between Liz Kay’s, Linda Ward’s and Vanetta Rosenberg’s places. Diane and Cath would have come on wet Mondays but every Monday last term was fine, so they went to work instead! Liz’s mother, Mrs McFadyen, was a regular visitor and gave us some helpful advice. It was Vanetta’s first attempt at spinning and she mastered the art very quickly. Hopefully next year will see a revival of interest in the group and Mondays might be wet.

Farewell.
Owen, Hope and Greg Marshall are leaving the district and on behalf of you all I would like to wish them all the best for the future. A farewell function will be held at Pat Tolley’s on Saturday 13th September beginning at 6.30 pm. This will take the form of a pot luck tea so bring something to eat and drink. EVERYONE WELCOME.

COMMUNITY COMMENT.
Recently I was asked to make a list of all the activities that take place in this district. The W.D.F.F provincial is compiling a booklet of all the H.B. district’s activities which it hopes will be of benefit to rural people moving from one district to another. Each activity has a contact name and telephone number. The list of activities available locally seems impressive. Included here are five different sports clubs, play centre, Institute, three choices of church service monthly, the country library service and of course THE SCHOOL. We hope this means that people coming into our district will not need to feel lonely now that the old habit of afternoon teas seems to have died out. This booklet presumably will be available through Farming House in Market St. Hastings.
