Born Napier, 18 July 1916, son of Arthur James Woodhouse and Wilhelmina Catherine (nee Allen); married Margaret Leah Thorp, daughter of Frederick and Maud Thorp, 1940, four sons, two daughters
Educated Napier Central School; Napier Boys’ High School; Auckland University, LLB 1940; Hon LLD, Victoria University 1978; Hon LLD, University of York, Toronto 1981.
Served Second World War, Lieutenant Commander in RNZNVR on secondment to RN; service in Motor Torpedo Boats; liaison officer with Yugoslav Partisans, 1943; Assistant to Naval Attaché, HM Embassy Belgrade, 1945
Joined Lusk Willis & Sproule, Barristers & Solicitors, 1946; Crown Solicitor, Napier, 1953; prepared report on fluoridation of water supplies, 1957; Judge of Supreme Court, 1961; Chairman, Royal Commission on Compensation and Rehabilitation in respect of Personal Injury in NZ, 1966-67; Chairman, Inquiry into similar questions in Australia, 1973-74; Judge of Court of Appeal, 1974; Member, Judicial Committee, Privy Council, 1974; President, Law Commission, 1986-91; President, NZ Secretary, International Commission of Jurists, 1986-.
