Dear Dot,
Just a few lines to let you know that both Jim & myself are still going strong. We have just come out of the trenches for […] days rest, after an exciting [eight] days in the front line. I must say that both of us had what you might call a very narrow shave. One soon gets used to hearing old Fritz’s shells coming & you simply laugh & joke, and say “what oh she bumps when a high explosive misses its’ mark.  We don’t mind the shrapnel, but no [bon] the high explosive. Our boys had very few casualties, but I must say we were lucky, for the night we left old Fritz straffed us severely. I am now attached to the machine gun section. I sincerely hope you are all well at home, as this leaves me. We are enjoying ourselves just now. I often drop Mr Russell a line, he gave me a great account of how they were going to land in Holland etc & were going to give Fritz a surprise. I am afraid no one knows how Germany is going to be crushed
Kind regards to all at home
C.C.Fl. Rollet

(I often say to Jim I wish I was working down your place & get a cup of tea & cake
These old biscuit are very hard.)

Description

Claude Rollet worked as a station hand at Whana Whana where Elsie (Dot) and Charles Massey (Jim in the postcard) were brought up.

Postcard is from the postcard album of Elsie Massey, a girl living on Whana Whana Station, also known as Dot or Biddie. The station cook, Tom Rouse, bought her the album in January 1911 and her collection of postcards and photos includes the First World War.
