Description
Arial [Aerial] Photo taken in 1996 showing “Oak Avenue” Ormond Road Hastings in the foreground. With Don Shaw’s home and farm. The red roofed house was “Somercotes” at end of Percival Road, Home of the original owner A.E. (Albert) and Ruth Hill — then their son E.F. (Ted) and Wife, Jean Hill. This block comprised of 75 acres which went from the end of Percival Road to Lyndhurst Road.
To the far side of the “Hill’s Homestead, to the first hedge, almost down to the Bluegum Tree and then dog legged at the back to Lyndhurst Road Hastings, comprising of 52 acres. These areas were farmed by Ted and Jean until the mid 1990’s with the exception of the 52 acre block which was sold to Douglas, and together with his wife Lynne began farming it on their own account in the 80’s
Their youngest son, Michael and Wife, Lois Hill bought the “Homestead” Block and Graeme Hill, their middle son bought the bottom part of the farm fronting Lyndhurst Road.
Te Mata Peak is in the background
This photo is a copy owned by Don Shaw who lives in Oak Avenue and the purpose of our obtaining a copy through Don’s courtesy is because of what you see has changed greatly – and forever.
The furrow paddock is the boundary fence between Shaw’s farm and the Hill’s farm.
The expressway now divides us.
The expressway is solely on the Shaw’s property and likewise all the other properties right through from
Evenden Road to Maraekakaho Road. Construction for this was started in 1997 and opened in 1999.
About 2003/4 we sold, along with Michael and Lo, the farms to David Cornes and in 2006 he on-sold it to the Hastings District Council for a sports park and the first sod was turned in July 2007 at a special ceremony to which we were invited.
Instead of vegetables and fruit being grown, we now nurture and grow in statue – Athletes.
