New Zealand’s Largest Choral Network

The New Zealand Choral Federation (NZCF), Te Kotahitanga Manu Reo o Aotearoa, is this country’s largest choral network, committed to promoting the performance, creation, and enjoyment of choral music for all. Our diverse community includes over 20,000 members from hundreds of community, school and chamber choirs performing in styles ranging from classical, gospel world, music, sacred music and barbershop through to jazz, musical theatre and opera.

Sitting within the NZCF is the Association of Choral Directors (ACD), an organisation that provides professional development and a mentoring network for choral directors. All conductors of choirs in The Big Sing are eligible for free ACD membership.

Welcome

Kia Ora and welcome to the NZCF East Coast Regional festival of The Big Sing. This year we will be hosting 18 choirs filled with talented students from 11 secondary schools. A special welcome to Lytton High School from Gisborne, Hukarere Girls’ College and Napier Boys’ High School whoa re joining us for the first time in a few years.

The Big Sing is made possible by the passion and dedication of the students and choir directors and through the support of Creative New Zealand and the Ministry of Youth Development. Many thanks also to NZCF Regional Committee, the team at Toitoi for all their hard work that goes on behind the scenes, and my team of volunteers for their support to ensure the seamless running of the day

Andrea Wilson   NZCF East Coast Regional Coordinator

Rosemary Turnbull   Adjudicator

Rosemary Turnbull is an accomplished musician who ahs made significant contributions to the music community. She completed her music degree, diploma of teaching, and LTCL, piano in Christchurch. In Wellington, Rosemary taught secondary school music and performed as a soloist and chorister for five years. She then pursued further vocal training overseas as a recipient of a Belgian post-graduate fellowship.

Returning to New Zealand Rosemary performed as a soloist with major choirs nationwide, and presented numerous recitals. For over 20 years she worked in Christchurch as a vocal itinerant in several secondary schools, establishing choirs in all of them. Rosemary also directed adult choirs including the Hagley Singers and Cecilian Singers and has led various choirs to perform in Italy.

Rosemary’s expertise has been recognised through roles such as a vocal tutor for New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir, a regional Big Sing adjudicator, and an NZCF Governance Board member. She has also worked as an Assessor with Creative New Zealand and Vocal Coordinator with Voices NZ and New Zealand Youth Choir.  Today, she continues to inspire through private teaching and vocal consultancy.
