From the PART TIME RETIREE

As some of you may have read in the last Infoline we have two NZART Conference/AGM award recipients amongst our members.
Xenia ZL4YL for having “the best AOC exam result under 18 years of age” and Warren ZL2AJ was given a “Certificate of Recognition” for his work in being involved in the establishment of the SOTA award, well done to you both. (We will have a wee presentation to Xenia at the earliest opportunity).

My absence at the last Branch meeting was due to Sue and I having a holiday at the Far North including Auckland, visiting both family and hams, we had a great time.

Over the last three weeks I’ve come out of retirement to take up my old job while the new people take a pre planned holiday. This has kept me occupied to say the least and I’m sure I’ve missed out on some HF day time contacts that I might otherwise have had, I did manage to rush in the door one evening to pick up on a contact that David ZL2OK was “holding” for me…what a hoot.

Please note that there is NO usual Br 13/HBARC meeting in June at the Pakowhai Hall…instead we will be shown around the ABB business at the Napier Airport (7-30pm, 22 June…don’t be late), see the separate note elsewhere (and note the “what to wear” note).

On the 27 July Br 13/HBARC will be having our usual “Donated Junk Auction” at the Pakowhai Hall, after the usual meeting. I give you this early notice so you can clean out your shacks and also save up some pocket money. I’m sure that most of you know the drill by now …you bring your junk along and we auction it back to you for money…ummmmm…well anyway it’s a fun night that helps our club balance sheet and provides us some funds to have a few “nice suppers” and the odd BBQ etc.

Talking of balance sheets it’s looking good and it’s a nice way to keep it. We have a few standing costs that need to be met and fund raising off sets the membership fee that we might otherwise each have to pay. I also remind you that we have a nice amount set aside for “self insurance” reasons and an occasional capital expenditure…we’re doing OK folks.

Don’t let Winter stop your ham radio activities and enjoy them.

BRANCH 13 / HBARC 22 JUNE MEETING
(NOT at Pakowhai Hall)

ABB is an engineering company operating in the fields of power generation, distribution and automation with over 150,000 employees in over 100 countries. The location in Napier is the so called “Centre of Excellence for Power Conditioning” within ABB. About 130 people develop, manufacture, sell and service products that protect sensitive equipment, tools, production lines or even whole factories from power quality problems. Those can be either coming from the utility end or could be made in-house by their own equipment. All ABB products are based on power electronics and range from about 100 kVA (kilo Volt Ampere) in low voltage (200-480 V/3~) to multi MVA (Mega Volt Ampere) in medium voltage.

We will open the barrier in the front car park at the main entrance to ABB, that should have sufficient parking capacity.

To get to ABB…once you have entered the Napier Airport entry/exit off the highway the road does a 180 degree loop. There is a small road leaving to the left after about 300m into the airport loop road. This one leads to ABB. If you miss it make a loop around the airport car parks and try again.

Remember…there is NO meeting at the Pakowhai Hall on 22 June, instead we meet at the ABB building off the Napier Airport carpark/loop road. Please be on time as the presentation starts promptly at 7-30pm. Wear closed shoes (no jandals etc) and if you have glasses and/or safety glasses bring them.

A LECTURE ON LOGICS?

A while ago at a local branch meeting we had an interesting talk on logics. However as I am not at all technically minded, my thoughts soon wandered on to another track parallel to the subject being discussed, and I could see a funny side to this serious topic called logics. The lecture went along the following lines.

The first part was on gates. Gates? Now I don’t know what gates have to do with logics but I got lost at the first one.

AND GATE – ONE THATS THERE      OR GATE – NEITHER HERE OR THERE

NOR GATE – NOT HERE AT ALL      HIGH GATE

LOW GATE      BETWEEN HIGH AND LOW GATES THE GATES GET UNPREDICTABLE

A TRIPLE 5   WOW!

Hastings Branch 13 NZART – Napier Branch 25 NZART   Page 6   Volume 16, Issue 6 June 2016

Then came C. Moss. I’m not sure if he came through a gate or not.

Next the subject took a turn towards Flip Flops. Interesting wee things.
Somehow or other these things ended up in a box! Preferably a black one.

Then they got involved with the gates.

After a while logics got mixed up with sinking currents, or was that currants?

Open drains followed.

and who was this?

I don’t think I’ll be able to forget that talk on Logics.  Who said it was logic?

Emergency Call-in Net

It was decided at the March meeting of the Napier ARC to discontinue the Emergency Call-in Net (ECI).

The net was first proposed by Lee ZL2AL(SK) at the February 2015 Branch 25 meeting and was run by Laurie ZL2TC and Dave ZL2DW.

Although participation was considerable initially, numbers have dropped to only a few over the last few months.

It would appear that though many support the concept, to actually interrupt normal activities for a very brief radio call is easily forgotten.

The Napier club suggests that the 670 and 3.615 frequencies are ‘officially’ adopted as the general ‘Ham’ communication channels in case of natural disaster.

This was proposed earlier by Rob ZL2US, see Break-out 3 March 2012.
