Estelle Martin: Born in Southland, began potting 10 years ago, attended week-end schools from time to time, and began full-time potting with Bruce 4 years ago. Member N.Z. Society Potters 6 years, World Craft Council (N.Z.) and H.B. Art Gallery and Museum, and exhibiting regularly with the former. Recently held combined exhibition with Bruce at Keirunga Gardens, Havelock North which was well received. Interested in all aspects of craft work. Have 3 sons aged 18 yrs., 16 yrs. and 13 yrs. Represented in private collections N.Z. and Overseas.
Bruce Martin: Began potting 6 years ago, and potting full-time last 4 years. Exhibiting member N.Z. Society, 5 years; Member World Craft Council and H.B. Art Gallery and Museum. Represented in Permanent collections Otago Museum, H.B. Art Gallery and Museum, N.Z. Embassy, The Hague; and represented in ‘Art of the Sixties’ exhibition for the Queen’s visit. Formerly Charge Radiographer Memorial Hospital, Hastings. Interested in all aspects of Craft work.
Although they pot individually Bruce and Estelle use the name ‘KAMAKA POTTERY’. Bruce marks his work with an imprest ‘B’ while Estelle uses a stylized ‘E’ brushed onto the pot.
These pots are made from a high fired Nelson stoneware clay with local clay slip and Papa glazes, iron, rock, and ash glazes fired in a reduced atmosphere.
