Wally Ireland has been a member for 53 years. When first joining was a ventriloquist and female impersonator, then came comedy turns with Percy Spiller and Eric Amner.

He played the ‘Dame’ part in 14 different Pantomimes until 1950 when he retired as a performing member.

During the time with the ‘Frivs’ he has not missed one performance. He has made a comeback twice since retirement; last time being 1970.

Has been President for 18 years.

Wally Ireland(President)

DOWN THE YEARS WITH THE FRIVS

It is my privilege and pleasure to welcome you to the 75th Jubilee performance of the ‘Frivs’.

When a small body of young men formed the ‘Frivs’ 75 years ago we are sure they never expected that the Company would be still performing, without missing a year, in 1971.

This is a wonderful achievement considering that in that time we passed through three Wars, and an Earthquake. During the 1914 – 18 War, girls were brought in to replace men serving overseas, but after the war ended, the Show returned to an all Man Company.

The great 1931 Earthquake was a very difficult time for the Company, losing all records, music and equipment in the fire, but they still performed that year.

Next came the great War of 1939 – 45 and girls were brought in once again and proved so successful that they have been a part of the Show ever since. We found to compete with coloured ‘talkies’ we had to have colour and charm in the show and the girls were the answer.

One of the highlights in the ‘Frivs’ history was when the Canterbury province was celebrating its Centennial in 1950 the ‘Frivs’ were invited to play in the Civic Theatre, Christchurch, for a week, as part of the celebrations, entertaining many thousands of people who were making their first acquaintance with the Show.

We take pride and pleasure in the fact that no member receives payment for his or her services and feel this is a wonderful effort as it means giving up much time and missing out on a lot of other things.

We cannot give an accurate figure of the amount of money raised for Charity and Schools but a very conservative estimate would be near to $250,000. Surely a record that would be hard to beat.

I hope in years to come there will still be young Men and Women interested in entertaining who will come forward to keep the name of the ‘Frivs’ before the public so that they, too, will have the pleasure in 25 years’ time of celebrating the Centennial of the Company.

We would like to thank you, the audience, for your continued support, as without it, we could not have carried on.

I trust you will have a most enjoyable evening with the ‘Frivs’.

SIDNEY HENNEY

NOLA ATKIN
(Music Arranger and Pianist)

Joined the ‘Frivs’ in 1969 as Pianist and Music Arranger. In this year’s show ’Jubilee Daze’ she had the immense task of scoring the Orchestration for all instruments in the 1971 Orchestra. A task the ‘Frivs’ express their grateful thanks for and welcome her back to the Company once again.

In private life Nola has her own Dance Orchestra playing cabaret and HB night spots. She is also a teacher of the piano.

ELIZABETH JOHNSON
(Wardrobe Mistress)

Joined the ‘Frivs’ in an official capacity in 1966 but always helped in the Make Up department for some years before that. In 1966 she undertook the onerous position of Wardrobe Mistress and a feature of the ‘Frivs’ shows in recent years has been the attractive and colourful costuming arranged by her.

Elizabeth has been associated with other organisations; the Napier Operatic Society, Napier Tin Hat Company in the capacities of Make Up and Wardrobe.

ALAN JOHNSON
(Stage Manager)

Stage Manager for 1971 – a position he has held since joining in 1966. During this time he has supervised and organised scenery used in ‘Friv’ productions and, with his team of efficient helpers, has helped to give the show that slickness demanded of a fast moving production.

Alan has also had back stage experience over many years with many H.B. societies; the main organisations being the Napier Operatic Society, Napier Tin Hat Company.

Percy Spiller, M.B.E. was one of the original members who formed the Napier Frivolity Minstrels and during that time acted in various capacities as performer, secretary and Producer, until the time of his death in January, 1950.

It is largely due to his efforts that today the ‘Frivs’ are held in such high esteem and the ‘Frivs’ continue to follow that ideal of helping worthwhile organisations; a foundation so firmly based in those early days.

Percy Spiller was also a widely known and respected personality in the Hawke’s Bay province and beyond. For 30 years he was also secretary of the Napier Thirty Thousand Club and the Napier Competition Society and many kindred organisations. After the 1931 earthquake he became secretary of The Napier Reconstruction Committee.

At this time of celebration it is good and proper to remember his service to the ‘Frivs’ as we toast ‘Absent Friends’.

On Tour with the Frivs
(Contributed)

The ‘Frivs’ never say ‘no’ to a worthy cause!

From the time of their early days in 1897, as ‘Friv’ folk-lore has it, they began to move about Hawke’s Bay and beyond. Their first public performance was sometime in 1898; the location being Eskdale.

Instant popularity and demand for the services of the infant organisation evidently engendered from its inception the characteristic (retained to this very day) of having the agility, ability and above all the willingness to travel to anywhere in response to a genuine request for assistance. In all its journeying the Frivs have been transported by what is now known as the Hawke’s Bay Motor Company Ltd. From horse drawn coach right through to present day luxury land liner, the H.B. Motor Co., one of New Zealand’s oldest Passenger Transport concerns, and one which possesses an unblemished record for the safe carriage of its passengers, has, with one exception, delivered the Frivs to thousands of destinations, over all manner of roads, and returned them home in perfect safety. The Frivs hereby acknowledge a debt of gratitude to the Motor Company and their excellent drivers for past services and those still freely given – nothing has ever been a trouble to them. Without fear of contradiction the Frivs claim to be mileage-millionaires of the Hawke’s Bay Motor Company.

The one exception to a safe return occurred in 1929 and that was no fault of the Motor Company or its Driver – the edge of the road crumbled.

That year a ‘Tour’ was arranged in two large ‘Cadillac’ Service Cars with chara-a-banc [charabanc] type transverse four-a-breast seating. We played to capacity houses in Taupo, Rotorua, Tauranga, Whakatane, Opotiki and Gisborne. On 25th January, 1929, having played Opotiki the previous night, we departed before breakfast very early in the morning with the intention of arriving in Gisborne, ninety miles distant, in sufficient time to set up and play that same night. In the course of this Tour we had travelled some rough stretches and we had been warned that the road ahead this day was tough but the one-way traffic Motu Gorge Road turned out to be a shocker. At approximately 7.30 am. when ascending the Meremere Hill the outside edge of the road subsided while the smaller of two Service Cars was negotiating a sharp corner. The larger Service Car was leading and although having its own difficulties in having to stop and back in order to get round some of the sharp corners, thought the smaller vehicle should be closer. They decided to wait and when the second car did not appear some members walked back and discovered the tragedy. All twelve passengers went over with the bus but fortunately the first stage of the drop was sheer and they spilled into the canvas hood which their weight caused to part from the car body. This allowed the vehicle to roll down the almost vertical hillside ahead of the passengers who followed while sustaining various injuries and coming to rest one hundred feet down a very steep rocky slope. Only one passenger escaped injury and he dropped furthest – one hundred and twenty feet – landing in a sitting position on a fern stump. The Service Car continued downwards and is still in the gully. Reporting the mishap next day the Gisborne evening newspaper included the following paragraph. “One hundred per cent” was the remark made by one of the Frivolity Minstrels who was in the car which plunged over the bank on the Meremere Hill in the Motu Gorge. While chatting to a ‘Herald’ reporter after arriving in Gisborne the manager of the company told an amusing incident. It appears that one of the performers, a young man, called by his companions ‘one hundred per cent’ on account of it being his favourite saying, was amongst the passengers who went over the bank.

When the service car which by then had rolled to a standstill amongst fern at the bottom of the gully, was located by the rescue party, one called from the road above ‘How are you down there?’ The answer came faint but cheerful ‘One hundred per cent’.

Of those injured, five were taken to hospital and the remainder proudly maintained the best traditions of theatre and staged a performance in Gisborne that same night; some had arms in slings others bandaged faces.

TAILPIECE – Over intervening years ‘One hundred per cent’ has continued to be a regular performing member and can still take a ‘drop’ – but it must be good.
