Letter From E Nelson 1918

24 Vautier St

6/1/18

Dear Henry

Very many thanks indeed for your’s & Mary’s hansome [handsome] present; it was very acceptable just then as I have had to send Eileen for a holiday to Gisborne poor kiddie she had a touch of brain fever studying too hard for the Exam for 2 days I was afraid we were going to lose her, temperature to within a point of 104, so that was high enough, but she is picking up now on a station 35 miles out.  The holidays passed off very quietly, me spending Christmas day in bed bad, so far I have been bad 4 days out of the 6 of this year so there was not much happiness about it, I cannot either sleep nor eat, it is just 3.5 a.m. & I have not shut an eye & it is the same every night, I just sit in those chairs

[possibly page missing]

cannot mend it without taking it home, they look very easy things to ride in everybody was taken with it that had a ride women by the dozen.

Dear Harry I want to take this opportunity of thanking you & Mary not only for your last kindness but for your many kind acts in the pasts, which I am afraid were not appreciated sometimes like they deserved, well it was my loss I can plainly see, so please forget my ungratefulness I dont know how much longer this is going on, I’m getting pretty weak but I managed to walk to Church this morning, the first time for about 3 years.  Lady Whitmore sent her car to take me home, it was very kind of her.  Well good bye for the present hoping to see you both soon I remain your affect brother E Nelson.

I cannot write now I’m too shakey.
