5 August 1970.

Dr D.A. Ballantyne,
“Stoneycroft”,
208A Lyndon Rd,
HASTINGS.

Dear Dr Ballantyne,

As I am now retiring from chairmanship of the Trust, I am writing to put on record the gist of our discussion when I had the pleasure of calling on you and Mrs Ballantyne in June. I have reported verbally to the Trust, and told members of the excellent state in which the property has been maintained, and of the improvements you have carried out since my former visit with Professor Beaglehole. Members are entirely happy with your general acceptance of the Trust’s proposals, and with the tenor of our recent discussion. For good order, however, it is as well to put the various points in writing.

As I understand it, you will at your convenience write to the Trust accepting the proposals put to you in my letter of 13 March 1970. In addition, you will supply the Trust with copies of yours and Mrs Ballantyne’s wills, or of the appropriate portions of them, in order that they may be examined by the Commissioner of Inland Revenue for his confirmation that any bequests to the Trust come within the terms of the special provisions relating to [inserted- such] bequests, and thereby qualify for the appropriate benefits to your estate.

At some future date, when you consider it opportune, you will discuss with the Trust the establishment of an Advisory Committee, including representatives of the City Council, to assist in the arrangements for opening “Stoneycroft” to the public, and as a preliminary step towards the date (I hope many years away) when the property will come to the Trust.

My successor as chairman of the Trust is the Hon. W.J. Scott, and he will look forward, in due course, to hearing from you, and receiving your confirmation that I have correctly reported the gist of our conversation.

Wakefield House, 90 The Terrace, Wellington City, New Zealand

2.

It has been a great personal pleasure to me to meet you and Mrs Ballantyne and to have been associated with your magnificently public-spirited proposal for the preservation of “Stoneycroft”.

With warm regards,
Yours sincerely,

[Signed]
(Ormond Wilson)
