HASTINGS

Dear Estelle & Bruce,

Patricia Davidson has advised me that you have agreed to take part in a special display in conjunction with the Nelson Potters’ Exhibition, and that you have agreed to donate a pot for sale on the Gallery’s behalf.

I appreciate your gesture very much and I know that the Museum Board will also be grateful.  I hope that the exhibition is financially rewarding for you.

Kind regards,
Robert

INVITED ARTISTS  17 DECEMBER – 5 FEBRUARY

Outline and exhibition objectives

Invited Artists – an exhibition of work by local artists grew from dissatisfaction with the two “members’ exhibitions” organised annually by the Hawke’s Bay Art Society and Hawke’s Bay Art Gallery & Museum.  Criticism of the accidental nature of large open exhibitions, which, in the case of the Autumn Exhibition operates as a multimedia unselected show as against the selected Annual Exhibition concentrating on painting and sculpture.  Both exhibitions restrict the artists’ ability to show development, communicate and display work to the artists advantage.

In response it was decided to organise a joint exhibition of invited artists.  And invitation to participate has been based on the three main objectives of the exhibition:-  to emphasise quality and innovation in work being produced in the Hawke’s Bay region-  to make a coherent statement about the artists’ work-  represent as wide a cross section of artists contributing to the “art making” fabric of the region
