Re; Potter’s Marks.

In Vol. 36 of New Zealand Potter we see you were calling for photographs or drawings of potter’s marks – we hope that this contribution isn’t too late.

ESTELLE MARTIN

Top Mark:   Brushed in black underglaze under base of pot. Used until 1983.
Size aprox. as shown.

Bottom Mark:   Sgraffito, positioned in various places on pots but usually underneath. Used from 1983 on all Anagama fired work and often associated with date and the initials ‘N.Z.’
Size as shown.

BRUCE MARTIN

Top Marks:   Left – Brush in black underglaze on base of pot. Mostly on early work.
Size: Approx as shown.
Right – Impressed stamp on bottom edge of pot. Used until 1983.
Size: Approx. 8 x 6 mm.

Bottom Mark:   Sgraffito. Various positions but usually on base of pot. Used on all Anagama fired work from 1983 and often associated with date and the initials ‘N.Z.’
Size as shown.

The sgraffito marks were designed for us to use on our anagama work by Mr. Sanyo Fujii in 1983.
