Cabaret

Directed by
GILLIAN DAVIES

The Time:
Between New Year’s Eve 1929 and through the first months of 1930.

The Place:
Berlin, Germany – just prior to the rise of complete power of Hitler’s Nazi Regime.

Background:
In Autumn 1930, Christopher Isherwood, Novelist, wrote of Berlin, of the frenzied gaiety cloaking the unease of a fanatical belief in the Fatherland. He wrote ‘‘I am a camera, passive, recording, not thinking’’.

In Cabaret:
“The fixed and printed’’ pictures are revealed to us by the M.C.
The tarnished glitter of the Kit Kat Klub
A refuge from reality for the naive yet appealing Sally Bowles
The insidious growth of the Nazi party
The tenderness and love of two older people
The insight of the novelist himself
The sad acceptance of the few
The resignation of Germany to its future
