SUMMARY – CHAPTER 3. MAORI HISTORY (1840 – 1900)

1840-45 – repatriation of Ngati Kahungunu. Upokoiri signatories to Treaty.
1842 – death of Te Wanikau. Hori Te Kaharoa takes over.
1844 – William Colenso arrives at Waitangi with Renata Kawepo.
1845-48 – Renata active in negotiating return of Upokoiri and Hinemanu.
1848 – first requirement the return of Paeroa’s head.
– at hahunga ceremony for Te Wanikau Te Moananui invites Ngai Te Upokoiri to repatriate former lands.
1848-51 – Govt Land purchase agents in Heretaunga.
– jealousy between principal chiefs exploited by Govt.
1850 – first heke of Ngai Te Upokoiri returns to Pokonao, Clive
– establish cultivations under Ngati Hinemanu chief Noa Huke.
1851 – Govt employs Te Hapuku as assessor to facilitate purchases.
1851 – Waipukurau, Ahuriri and Mohaka purchases concluded.
1851-53 – discontent over Te Hapuku’s land sales tactics.
1853 – sale of Okawa to Crown as demonstration of authority by Te Moananui.
– second heke of Ngai Te Upokoiri arrives from Manawatu.
– Raniera Te Ahiko and Aperahama Kaipipi repatriate old Omahu.
1855 – posts erected at Whanawhana [Whana Whana] to limit Te Hapuku’s land sales.
1857- land sales issue unresolved. Leads to battle of Pakiaka and defeat of Te Hapuku.
1858 – Te Hapuku banished to Te Hauke.
– Renata initiates leasehold of R.D. 9 blocks.
– Conflict over sale of Aorangi and Ria Tawhara’s participation.
– Meeting of King movement at Waiohiki. Te Whata a Te Herunga .
1862 – final heke of Ngai Te Upokoiri returns. Settlements at old Omahu, Ohiti.
1863 – flour mill established at Paherumanihi. Noa Huke treasurer.
1866 – Hauhau movement leads to Omarunui engagement.
1867 – Te Arawhita a Tikumu 11 feast held at Omahu for Te Hapuku.
– great flood changes course of Ngaruroro river. Te Kareti est.
1869 – Te Porere engagement at Taupo. Renata Kawepo loses eye.
1870s – Europeans enter into freehold arrangements with Maori.
– Upokoiri and Hinemanu grazing Inland Patea.
– School and church for Ngai Te Upokoiri at Omahu.
– litigation over Tunanui [Tuna Nui].
1880s – King Tawhiao visits Omahu.
– roads to interior constructed.
– Tunanui resolved.
1888 – death of Renata Kawepo initiates the celebrated Omahu hearing.

1889-90. Omahu hearings. Airini Donnelly v. Wi Broughton.
1894  – deaths of Noa Huke and Raniera Te Ahiko. William Colenso at Noa’s tangi.
– Kohurau partition.
1897 – Ohiti/Waitio blocks investigated in Native Land Court.
– great flood.
