Newspaper Article 1919 – Obituary – Mr NE Beamish

OBITUARY.

MR. N. E. BEAMISH.

Mr. N. E. Beamish, who died at his residence, Stoneycroft, Hastings, on March 3, in his 93rd year, arrived at Lyttelton in 1850 in the sailing vessel Lady Nugent, from Cork. After spending two years at Lyttelton, there being at that time not a house where Christchurch now stands, he became manager of the Hon. W. B. Rhode’s Heaton Park Estate, Rangitikei, a position which he held for 18 years, when at the request of his brother-in-law, Mr. Thomas Lowry, he moved to Hawke’s Bay and took over the management of the Okawa Estate. There he remained for 20 years, afterwards removing to Stoneycroft, where he resided until the time of his death. Mr. Beamish married Miss Elizabeth Couper, and had three daughters (Mrs. A. H. Wallis, of Gisborne; the late Mrs. John Jameson [Jamieson], of Glenross, and Mrs. Barcroft, of Hastings), and four sons (William, George, Nat, and Henry). Mr. Beamish, who was born in 1827, had lived under five sovereigns (George IV., William IV., Victoria, Edward VII., and George V.). Forty years ago he purchased the Whana Whana run of 10,000 acres, which has since been divided amongst his seven children.
