Newspaper Article 1939 – Popular Bride

Miss Rona Tong, a popular bride-to-be, whose marriage to Mr Les McCarthy will take place this month, has been the guest of honour at several recent gift parties.

Last Saturday a linen afternoon was given by Mrs L. Clothier and Mrs J Seed at the former’s residence in Nelson Street, Hastings. The drawing-room was attractively decorated with Iceland poppies.

A happy afternoon was spent at games and competitions, the competition winners being Misses J. Renouf, I. Wright and D. Sutcliff.

After a delicious savoury afternoon tea had been served the bride-to-be was asked to open her many useful gifts. The guest of honour wore a gay French silk frock in wine and fuchsia tonings with black accessories.

Mrs Clothier received her guests in a long-sleeved frock of teal light weight wool and Mrs Seed’s brown frock was trimmed with beige.

Among those present were Mesdames D. Trumper, Les Andrews, Misses D. Frayn, N. Henderson, I. Wright, B. Morgan, D. Price, D. Sutcliff, R. Renouf and J. Renouf.

Pantry Afternoon.

Miss Betty Hodgkinson and Miss Nola Fraser gave a pantry afternoon for Miss Rona Tong at Miss Hodgkinson’s residence, Hastings. The drawing-room was attractively decorated with purple irises and pink poppies.

A jolly afternoon was spent at games and competitions, games being won by Mrs G. S. Hodgkinson and Misses Tong, Smyrk, Swain, Z. Marshall and Reid.

After a delicious tea the guest of honour opened her gift parcels and thanked her friends for their kindness. She was wearing a pretty green silk frock with a novel belt in two shades of green.

Miss Betty Hodgkinson wore a dainty frock in prune tonings, and Miss N. Fraser was in a brown and orange floral frock.

Among those present were Mesdames M. Cohen, E. H. Hodgkinson, G. S. Hodgkinson, E. Fraser, P. Smyrk, Misses D. Reid, J. Smyrk, D. Swain, Nola Henderson, M. Bunny, Z. Marshall, Phyllis Marshall and N. Symons.

Evening Party.

Another pantry evening was given for Miss Tong by Miss N. Angove and Mrs J. Seed at the latter’s residence, Hastings.

After supper the guest of honour opened her parcels, revealing many useful gifts. On behalf of his fiancee, Mr Les McCarthy thanked those present for their kindness.
