Carrem Koorey

Mr Carrem Koorey, who died in Hastings on Sunday at the age of 97, had lived 70 years in Hastings.

He was born in Bascinta, Lebanon, and as a young man emigrated to Australia where he spent two years before coming to New Zealand.

He landed in Auckland in 1895, married there and moved to Hastings the following year to set up in a drapery, jewellery and fancy goods business in Station St (now Russell St) and later in Heretaunga St, opposite the present shop of Millar and Giorgi.

Mr Koorey later established a taxi business and was one of the earliest owners of a motorcar in Hastings.

He also acquired property interests and took a lively interest in town and district affairs.

He was the oldest member of the New Zealand Lebanese Society and was also a foundation member of the St Vincent de Paul Society of which he was an active member until about two months ago.

He was a keen worker in the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, being a collector for 50 years and for many years he regularly visited patients in hospital and in their homes.

He leaves four children – Mr Peter Koorey, Mrs R. F. Geor (Admah), Mrs G. K. Murfitt (Nazaire), Pakipaki, and Mrs G. Barnes (Cecilia), and 19 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
