Bon Marche’s Mrs Jones dies at 85

Mrs Hinemanu Jones, the daughter of Bon Marche Ltd founder Mathew Johnson died on Sunday aged 85.

Mrs Jones was the wife of the late James F. Jones, and mother of the Jones brothers Ross, Stuart, Bryce and Richard.

Born in Hastings in 1901, Mrs Jones lived in Hastings all her life, except for a year in Napier following her marriage.

She was educated at Trinton School, which was the forerunner to Woodford House, Havelock North.

A life-long member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Mrs Jones was an active supporter of many other community organisations.

Her father was for a period the deputy-Mayor of Hastings, as well as being a friend and counsellor of many of the local Maori elders at that time.

When she was born, the elders of the Ngati Hinemanu asked that she be named after their famous chieftainess of the same name.

A private funeral was held on Monday.
