Bounty from a fiery kiln

BRUCE and Estelle Martin admire the first items of pottery removed from their anagama kiln at Bridge Pa near Hastings yesterday.

About 1000 items, representing a year’s work for the couple, were fired over eight days with temperatures inside the kiln reaching a massive 1330 degrees celsius.

Mr Martin said this was the hottest the kiln had been in five firings.

“The metal door did not seal the kiln perfectly and this allowed more air to get in, helping the burning process,” he said.

Though the firing was completed about 10 days ago, the temperature inside the kiln yesterday was still about 30 degrees celsius.

Mr Martin said 15 cord of radiata pine was used for the firing which had been a success.

“I am more than pleased with the range of colours produced,” he said.
