Hastings potter wins

A Hastings potter has won the first prize of $5000 in a national potters’ exhibition. Bruce Martin won the New Zealand Society of Potters’ 32nd exhibition award with a slab-built box, pictured titled ‘‘Under the Willows”. Martin, who was president of the New Zealand Society of Potters during the 1970s, lives and works with his wife, Estelle, in Pakipaki. His work uses ancient wood firing techniques in which the pots are glazed with deposits of ash, built up on the surface over nine days.
