HB woman 104 today

A Waiapu House, Havelock North resident, Flora Barnett, was today celebrating her 104th birthday.

Mrs Barnett was born in Oamaru and spent most of her early life in Timaru before embarking on a nursing career in Christchurch. She married a doctor, Geoffrey Barnett, and brought up seven children while living in Dunedin.

Six of Mrs Barnett’s family are still alive, a son having been killed in the Second World War. Three of her daughters, Joan Velvin, Susan Cashmere and Margaret Bushby, live in Hawke’s Bay and celebrated their mother’s birthday with her today.
